There is a safe pathway to reopening our county and our country. Follow three simple guidelines:

1. Follow the guidelines put out by the federal government — social distancing, wear a mask, wash your hands

2. Human empathic caring is a social part of public health. Each of us has a personal responsibility to care for family, friends, and community. Follow the guidelines of the human heart by doing all we can to keep people safe by not spreading germs.

3. Do what your parents and grandparents taught you — follow the basic hygiene rules of washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough, staying home when you are sick. Separate yourself from sick individuals.

I’m old enough to recall quarantine signs on homes. Those signs were put up to warn and protect neighbors, "Stay away. We are sick and don’t want you to get sick.

COVID-19 is different from the sickness we are used to. People who exhibit no systems can pass the virus on to others. Therefore, everyone must exercise caution to protect others. The above three suggestions are all we have at this point to protect our community.

Our society has put safety provisions — seat belts, fire alarms, accessible facilities, speed zones, no smoking zones and many others — in place to save lives and protect public health. Now we must put into place sensible provisions to keep all of us safe from contracting COVID-19.

There is a workable pathway to safely reopening. Now is not the time to be selfish, self-serving and act with an attitude of “I’ll do what I want." Now is the time to be caring responsible citizens by just simply following all new and old proving public health guidelines .

Implementing these simple rules will open our road to a form of new normal.
