Ralph “Rusty” F. Gates Jr., 600 Laurel Drive, Sharpsville, passed away at 5:25 a.m. Wednesday (10-4-06) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a seven-month illness. He was 88.

Mr. Gates was born Nov. 29, 1921, in Sharon to Ralph F. Gates Sr. and Anna E. Foulk Gates.

He graduated from Sharon High School and retired in 1987 as a machinist from the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, where he worked for 14 years. He previously was employed for 12 years as a machinist at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

A Navy veteran, Mr. Gates served during World War II.

As an active member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sharon, he was a volunteer for several years with the church food pantry.

His first wife, the former Betty J. Romelfanger, whom he married Aug. 30, 1948, passed away March 21, 1992. His second wife, the former Mabel L. Peters Filer, whom he married July 31, 1993, survives at the residence.

Surviving besides his wife, Mabel, are: a daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Jean A.) Tremblay, Erie; two sons, Richard D. Gates and his wife Patricia, Midlothian, Va.; and Robert D. Gates and his wife Cindy, Westport, Conn.; two stepsons, Ronald Filer and his wife Paula, Largo, Fla.; and Richard Filer and his wife Barbara, San Antonio, Fla.; four grandchildren, Brian, Michael, Lauren and Paul Gates; and three great-grandchildren.

Besides his first wife, Mr. Gates was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Katherine Irons, Christine Coan and Hannah Swartz; and a great-grandchild.
