There were no major upsets of former champions on opening night of the District 10 Class AA Wrestling Championships at Sharon High School Friday although a few section champs were dumped.

Reynolds’ Cody Kelly (130) and Greenville’s Coty Burnett (125) continued on in quest of their third district titles, while other defending champs moving into this morning’s action are Reynolds’ Mason Beckman (112), Union City’s Shane Rankin (112), Sharon’s Jordan Moss (135), Grove City’s Caleb Kolb (171), Commodore Perry’s Tim DeFrances (189) and Sharpsville’s Justin Buchanan (215).

Sam Kuhn (152) of Harbor Creek won in 2007 and eyes a second crown as well.

The morning session which includes semifinals and consolation rounds begins at 9 a.m. Consolation finals are set for 3:30 p.m., with parade of champions at 5.

The team race is shaping up as usual with Reynolds a big favorite to clinch its 9th straight title and 17th overall in the storied history of Raider wrestling. Seven Raiders advanced into today’s semis: Dylan D’Urso (103), Beckman, Adam Matthews (119), Kelly, Luke Taylor (145), Greg Baptiste (160) and Will Ringer (285).

Commodore Perry and Fort LeBoeuf each moved five into the semis.

“It was a typical tournament, some ups, some downs,” said Reynolds coach Brian Hills. “We lost a few I thought we could get, but maybe won some others we weren’t sure of. Getting seven out of 11 into the semis isn’t too bad. The main thing now is for the others to come back in the consolations and get at least fifth. I think we can advance everyone (to regionals).”

Following is a look at the tournament by weight class:

103 – Favorite Dylan D’Urso (36-2) of Reynolds needed only 1:17 Friday to pin Ryan Gossett of Slippery Rock and today faces Matt Spragale of Mercer. On the other side of the bracket, Section 1 champ Tyler Pier of Harbor Creek will take on Jamestown’s Tyler Roberts.

112 – This weight features a pair of defending district champs in Reynolds’ Mason Beckman and Union City’s Shane Rankin. Rankin (26-3) could have his hands full today with Johnny Pas of Grove City, who Rankin edged 7-6 in last year’s semis. Beckman (40-3), a heavy favorite to win the weight, will face Saegertown’s Sean Byham.

119 – Again a Reynolds wrestler is one of the picks to reach the finals as Raider Adam Matthews (31-5) meets Ian Chiesa of Northwestern. On the other side of the bracket, Section 1 champ Christian Drain (23-5) of North East tangles with Harbor Creek’s Ryan Johnson.

125 – Greenville’s Burnett got a scare when he was dumped on his back Friday before winning by major decision. Still, the Trojan senior (20-2) is expected to nail down his third title here and meets Matt Graff of Maplewood in the semis. The other semifinal shows North East’s Matt Gregory (27-7), Section 1 winner, facing David Osterberg of Northwestern.

130 – Raider star Kelly (40-2), like Burnett, is an easy pick to win his third D-10 crown barring a huge upset. Kelly takes on Seneca’s Adam Armstrong in the semis. On the other side of the bracket, Fort Leboef’s section champ Riley Smith (29-6) meets Levi Morton of North East. Smith, a freshman, was decked by Kelly in the D-10 Duals.

135 – Defending state champ Moss (28-1) is top gun at this weight as he seeks to win a 2nd D-10 crown. Moss faces Greenville freshman Randy Perkins in the semis. On the other side of the bracket, Section 1 champ Kyle Eisaman of North East takes on David Church of Fort LeBoeuf. Church upended Reynolds’ Tony D’Urso, 9-8, to avenge an earlier loss at the D-10 Duals.

140 – These semis could be among the better matches of the morning. Greenville freshman ace Cody Copeland had a rough go with J.T. Mannozzi of Mercer Friday, before winning a 3-1 thriller. The Trojan (37-4) section champ faces Commodore Perry senior Jordan Powell (29-5) in what should be another tight battle. Section 1 champ Thomas Woodward (29-7) of Fort LeBoeuf faces Hickory’s Mike Vernille (31-7) on the other side of the bracket.

145 – Commodore Perry’s Brandon Collins knocked off Fort LeBoeuf section champ Jeremy King, 3-1 in double overtime and will meet Reynolds’ Luke Taylor in the semis. Section 2 champ Fabio Boccuzzi (34-7), who looked solid in a 5-1 win over Greenville’s Tyler Landfried Friday, meets Cochranton’s Cody Northcott this morning.

152 – Section 1 champ Herbie Hennegan got off to a slow start and dropped a 6-2 decision to Seneca’s Nate Smith. Smith will meet Nick Bancroft of Maplewood in the semis. Unbeaten Kuhn (31-0) takes on Fairview’s Josh Eckendorf as he tries to rebound from last year’s finals loss and get back to the top of the medal stand like 2007.

160 – Sharon’s unbeaten Lewendo Teague had his hands full with Hickory’s Tyler Gargano, before holding on for a 3-2 victory. Teague will face Reynolds’ Greg Baptiste, who Teague defeated 5-2 last weekend. Section 1 champ Christian Reitz (29-1) takes on Grove City freshman Wesley Phipps.

171 – Undefeated Kolb (30-0) of Grove City was impressive with a 19-second pin Friday and is a big-time favorite to record a second D-10 title today. He’ll meet Tony Lisek of Northwestern in the semis. Section 1 champ Andrew Church faces Commodore Perry sophomore Steve Ceremuga this morning.

189 – This weight offers another pair of outstanding semifinals pairings. Section 2 champ Nick Miller (23-1) of Grove City takes on defending champ DeFrances of CP, while Section 1 winner Brandon Bradney of Fort LeBoeuf faces Greenville’s R.J. Malson. All four advanced with falls Friday.

215 – Sharpsville’s unbeaten Buchanan (37-0) eyes his second straight D-10 title as he meets Jared Merritt of Northwestern. Buchanan notched his 100th career victory Friday night with a pin over West Middlesex’s Roscoe Fette. Section 1 champ Jared Burger (30-4) of Union City will have a rough go this morning with Commodore Perry junior Brian Hooks.

285 – Reynolds’ Will Ringer (35-5) fills out the Raider contingent in the semis as he’ll meet Greg Reinke of Union City. In the other semi, Section 1 champ Mike Paradise takes on a real load in Joe McElhinney of Cochranton. McElhinney (13-1) was 10-0 before breaking his wrist in midseason. He made his return last week at sections.
