MEADVILLE – Coach Dennis Ranker’s Grove City Eagles won the District 10 Class AA Team Golf Championship Friday at The Country Club.
The Eagles posted a team total of 346 to outdistance Fairview (351), Corry (356), Saegertown (367) and Lakeview (383).
The top four scores out of five for each team count.
Grove City totals were: Jack Donahue (83), David Dennis (84), Troy Loughry (88), Sam Norris (91), Toby Matson (96).
“We were confident coming in and thought that if we did what we were supposed to do, based on scores, we’d be OK,” said Coach Ranker. “But you know golf.
“Our two best players all year (Loughry and Norris) didn’t advance in the individual play, they had tough days, but Jack and David did. It’s kind of heart-breaking when seniors don’t advance, but at least they move on with the team and have some bigger goals.
“I’m happy for Jack and David. Jack is a range rat and practices all the time and David does too. It’s nice to see kids who put their heart into it do well.”
The team subregional will be set for Oct. 10 at Treasure Lake, DuBois, against District 9 champion Ridgway. The winner of that match will move on to the state tourney in York.
Scores for Coach Ralph Sunderlin’s Lakeview Sailors: Brett Beith (86), Nate McIntire (93), Anthony Grim (102), Cody Miller (102), Cameron McFeely (105).
Cathedral Prep won the AAA crown over McDowell, 322-339.
After the first day of the AA individual competition, Slippery Rock’s Jacob Wolak is in the lead with a 77, followed closely at 78 by Hickory’s Cam Colbert and Carter Hassenplug.
Other local qualifiers who moved on to today’s second round are: Grove City’s Donahue (83) and Dennis (84) and Hickory’s Ryan Knott (85).
The top 8 finishers will move on to the PIAA Subregional on Oct. 15 at Tom’s Run, Blairsville.
Area linksters failing to reach the qualifying cut of 85 were:
Lakeview’s Brian Beith (86), Nate McIntire (93), Anthony Grim (102), Cameron McFeely (105); Slippery Rock’s Logan Wolak (86), Walter Allison (92); Grove City’s Loughry (88), Norris (91); Kennedy Catholic’s Charlie Gonzalez (90), Sean Kirkland (110); Mercer’s Logan McCandless (106); Reynolds’ Johnathan Crumbacher (138).
