Coach Ed Newmeyer’s Hickory High girls tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to Villa Maria Academy on the outdoor courts at Villa Maria in Erie on Wednesday in the District 10 Class 2A Team Championships.

This season’s team championships were held at Villa due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is usually held at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie.

Hickory, the Region 1 champions, closed out the season with a 13-2 record. The Hornets lost their season-opener and then put together a 13-match win streak to capture the region title.

The Hornets’ region title is the program’s 6th since 2012 under coaches Newmeyer and Joe Bender. Bender is currently on a 6-month military deployment.

It was Region 2 champ Villa Maria’s 5th straight District 10 team title.

Singles: Tara Thomas (VM) def. Daphne Borowicz, 6-0, 6-0; Ryleigh Valone (VM) def. Isabelle Frangakis, 6-2, 6-0; Anna Poranski (VM) def. Nicolette Leonard, 6-0, 6-3. Doubles: Abby Consiglio-Anne Marie Prichard (VMA) def. Abbie Bender-Ava Spielvogle, 6-1, 6-2; Grace Teed-Margaret McGovern (VM) def. Hannah Beighley-Nora Logue, 6-2, 6-3.

“I would like to congratulate Villa Maria on the outstanding play exhibited today and wish them all the best moving forward,” said Newmeyer. “Our players across the board got a first-hand look at an extremely high level of tennis.

“Out of our starting seven, we have one junior and four sophomores, so I hope this experience serves as motivation for them as they continue with their tennis development.”

Notes: Fairview beat McDowell, 3-2, to capture the D-10 Class 3A championship. ... Villa Maria will host the District 10 singles and doubles tourneys. The singles tourney is Saturday at 11 a.m. The doubles tournament starts at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
