Kennedy girls 1A champs

Kennedy Catholic poses with the District 10 Class 1A championship trophy after beating Farrell, 64-40, on Saturday at Mercer High School.

MERCER – While it would be considered far from an artistic success, no one from Kennedy Catholic was complaining.

The Lady Golden Eagles eased to the proud program’s 25th District 10 Class 1A championship via a 64-40 victory over Farrell in a Saturday matinee.

In the county seat at Mercer High, the region rivals combined for 51 turnovers and 62 missed field-goal attempts, some of which might be attributable to their familiarity with each other. KC swept the Lady Steelers in the home-and-home regular-season series.

Also, KC’s Leah Lombardi is the lone senior on either squad, meaning these teams could continue meeting for more titles in the future.

But on Saturday the trio of Malia Magestro (25 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists), Bellah DiNardo (16 points, 9 rebounds), and Addie Flanders (15 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) proved decisive. Also, Andrea Suhar contributed a 6-point, 5-rebound, 4-assist line to key Kennedy Catholic (17-6).

“We’ve been preachin’ all year long, that in order for us to be successful we would have to have our younger kids step up. We had not one kid with varsity experience (entering the season), other than Malia,” began KC Head Coach Justin Magestro. “And we knew that, if we could develop the younger kids – especially Andrea Suhar and Addie Flanders; we knew what we had in Leah and Bellah – but I think Malia did a great job finding her teammates and gettin’ them involved.

“And the schedule that we played, non-league, played huge benefits for us (Satur)day. We talked about playing the best teams we can, outside the region. We did that, and I think that really prepared us for (Satur)day,” Magestro added.

It was the 9th consecutive crown for Kennedy Catholic, but by his estimation, the 14th for the Magestro family, the KC coach said, including himself, siblings and children.

“We never take it for granted. Every one’s sweet,” Justin Magestro said. “We came into this game and we expected to get this one, and we knew it’d be as sweet as the last one.”

For Farrell (7-16), Kyra Crosby collected a game-high 10 caroms and added 8 points, Sanaa Brodie bucketed 9 points, and Pierra Parker posted a 5-point, 4-rebound, 4-assist line.

“I thought we played a great game and my kids played their hearts out,” said Farrell Coach Ed Turosky. “They are a young group that grew over the season and represented our school well. There’s good things to come in the future.”
