On Jan. 11, while bowling in the Dan Merkosky Memorial League, Greg Laird rolled an 819 series. His scores were 278, 279, and 244. This goes along with his 300 game that he shot on Dec. 7. He is averaging 214 for the season.

• Third and fourth games of 300 and 290 propelled Carl Jones into the winner’s circle of the Reynolds Lanes January TOC qualifier. His final total was 1173. Close behind was Brandi Evans with 1170. George Rearick finished 3rd with 1148, while Jeff Engles was 4th with 1111. Rick Coon was 5th with 1096.

Others who finished in the money included (6th) Josh Ryser (1093), (7th)Alan Carpec (1092), (8th) Gina Gregg (1087), (9th) Jeremy Fraley (1083), and (10th) Vanessa Chec (1079). Jones, Brandi Evans, Engles, Coon and Ryser advanced to the finals as Rearick qualified in an earlier event.

Jerrod Palmer was the first game leader with 264/304. Shawn Hoover and Jeff Guthrie (bothbowling scratch) were tied for 2nd with 300. Jamie Schoch was 3rd with 263/293. Russ Evans (268/289) was 4th, while Jones (265-286) was 5th.

In the 2nd game, Gregg shot 300 and moved from 9th to 1st with 596. Brandi Evans shot 280 and moved from 8th to 2nd with 592. Coon also shot 300, moving from 19th to 4th with 566. Rearick (286) moved from 16th to 5th with 560.

In the 3rd game, Coon shot another 300 and moved into first place with 866. Rearick shot 300 and moved from 5th to 2nd with 864. Jones also shot a 300 and moved from 10th to 3rd with 862. Brandi Evans managed a 238 and dropped from 2nd to 4th with 861. Gregg (213) and Engles (262) were tied for 5th with 825.

In the final game, Jones followed his 300 game with a 290 to claim 1st place with 1173. Brandi Evans shot 278 to move from 4th to 2nd with 1170. Rearick shot 280, but fell one notch to 3rd with 1148. Engles (277) moved from 5th to 4th with 1111, while Coon (230) fell from the leader spot to 5th with 1096.

Handicap jackpots went to Palmer (304), Gregg (316), Jones (321), and Kevin Clark (316).

Scratch jackpots were won or shared by the following: Guthrie, Shawn Hoover, Adam Welsh, Gregg, Rick Busch, Coon (2) Jones, Stover, Rearick, Ryan Fraley, Chec, and Jeremy Fraley (all 300’s).

Prize money was as follows: (1st-$330), (2nd-$180), (3rd-$140), (4th-$110), (5th-$90), (6th-$80), (7th-$70), (8th-$60), (9th-$50), and (10th-$40).

The event attracted 60 entries.

The next 9 Pin singles No Tap tournament will be Feb. 6.

• On Saturday, Jan. 29, Reynolds Lanes will be hosting the Mercer County Bowling Association (MCBA) Mystery Doubles Tournament. The event will begin at noon with check-in at 11:30. The entry fee is $25.

The event is USBC certified and to enter, you must be an adult member of the USBC. It is a handicap event with handicap being 90% of 225. There is a random draw for doubles.

There will be optional side pots to include jackpots, eliminator and brackets. There will also be a 50/50, a ball raffle, and natural doubles.

• On Sunday, Feb. 13, Sunset Lanes will be hosting their 30 annual Super Bowl Sweeper. The event will be sponsored by Miller Lite and will begin at 11 a.m. This tournament has been a mainstay for 30 years and attracts many of the premier bowlers from the surrounding area. Last year’s winner was Adam Barta from Youngstown.

This is a scratch tournament and is open to both male and female bowlers. The entry is $70 and 1st place is estimated at $1350 based on 80 entries.

Additional places will pay as follows: (2nd-$675),(3rd and 4th-$325), (5th-through 8th-$170), (9th through 12th-$130), (13th through 16th-$100), and (17th through 20th-$70). Once again, all the above is based on 80 entries.

Here is a brief review of the format. Participants will be divided into 8 NFL divisions. Each bowler will bowl four games across four pair of lanes. The NFL format will be used to determine those who advance.

Brackets, jackpots, and eliminators will be available, but are optional.

• Sunset Lanes in Farrell will also have a Super Bowl party. The event will be held in the 11th Frame Lounge and will begin at 4 p.m. 

Food and drink specials will be available during game time. Plan to attend and enjoy the Super Bowl on a large screen TV.
