The Mercer High boys and girls soccer teams both advanced to the District 10 Class 1A championship match with semifinal wins at Forker Field in Grove City on Thursday.

The Mercer boys rolled past Sharpsville, 8-1, while the Lady M’s edged Wilmington, 2-1.

Also Thursday, the season came to an end for the Grove City girls volleyball team with a 3-0 loss to Ft. LeBoeuf in the District 10 Class 3A quarterfinals.


Class 1A Semifinals

• Mercer 8, Sharpsville 1 – At Grove City’s Forker Field, the Mustangs are headed back to familiar territory.

Mercer (10-8) is headed to the District 10 Class 1A finals for the 6th straight season and will meet Wilmington at a site and time to be determined.

The Greyhounds (11-3) swept the regular-season series with a 2-1 win in the County Seat on Oct. 2 and a 1-0 victory in New Wilmington five days later.

The district championship game will be the first in six years the Mustangs didn’t meet Iroquois for a crack at the title. 

On the strength of TJ Ferrans’ overtime game-winner a year ago in the County Seat, Mercer has won 4 District 10 titles.

Thursday night, Max Graul and Jonah Dadich sandwiched Mustang goals around a Collin Trontel tally to hand the Mustangs a 2-1 lead entering the break.

In the second half, Mercer added to its lead with goals from Graul (2), Garrett Thumm, Owen Cappelli and Max Ellis. The Mustangs were also handed an ‘own’ goal.

With the loss, Sharpsville (8-9) will have to say goodbye to seniors George Mehler, Jackson Mendillo, Nate Murrin, Mack Staunch and Trontel – Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin. 

Class 2A Semifinals

Grove City battles Seneca at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Dollinger Field in Erie while Slippery Rock faces Fairview at 7 p.m. Monday at Meadville Area Senior High’s Bender Field.


Class 1A Semifinals

• Mercer 2, Wilmington 1 – In the nightcap at Forker Field, Julia Balaski scored off a rebound to send the Lady M’s into the District 10 championship match.

Mercer (13-2) will meet undefeated Region 3 champion Seneca for the D-10 crown next week at a site and time to be determined. The Bobcats (12-0) edged Mercer 3-1 in the season opener on Sept. 4.

Thursday evening, the Lady Greyhounds (13-4) struck first on a Reese Walker goal just over 10 minutes into the contest.

Ryan Dubiel’s blast into the upper-left corner of the goal pulled the Lady M’s into a 1-1 stalemate with 12:54 left in the first half to set up Balaski’s game-winner with 22:24 left in regulation.

With the loss, Wilmington must say goodbye to seniors Ashley Wignall, Camryn Kollar, Walker, Anna Williams and Lindsey Martineau – Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin.

Class 2A Semifinals

Slippery Rock faces Villa Maria Academy at 5 p.m. Monday at Meadville Area Senior High School’s Bender Field.

In the other semifinal, Ft. LeBeouf plays Gen. McLane at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Dollinger Field in Erie.


Class 3A Quarterfinals

• Ft. LeBoeuf 3, Grove City 0 – At Cochranton High School, the Lady Eagles (10-6) were swept by the Bison (15-4).Game scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-10.

Grove City: Hailey Conway 8 digs; Britney Kuhn 5 digs; Carlie Reynolds 9 assists, 5 kills; Cassie Smith 6 points, 5 kills; Delaney Callahan 5 kills; Abby Berry 5 kills, 10 assists, 7 digs.

LeBoeuf advances to play defending D-10 champ Conneaut Area in the semifinals. The other semifinal match is Villa Maria Academy vs. Warren.

Region 6 champ Villa earned a bye in the semifinals. Warren advanced by beating Meadville, 25-12, 11-25, 25-20, 29-27 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Class 2A Semifinals

The matches are set for 6 p.m. Wednesday. Sharpsville faces Corry at Meadville High’s “House of Thrills” while Harbor Creek battles North East at the Hagerty Family Events Center.
