A solid all-around athlete at Farrell High, Denny is being recognized as the consummate coach in a career that spanned 30 years at various high schools
He was a 2-year letterman in football and track at Farrell, playing fullback his senior year in 1968 on a team that went 7-3, the best record at the school since 1950 up until that time.
But it was coaching where he was a true Hall-of-Famer, being recognized by the West Penn Football Coaches Association with the Distinguished Coaching Award in 2006, and twice being recognized as coach of the year as some of the highlights.
In football at Kennedy he served as 9th-grade coach, defensive coordinator and then head coach in 1984-86, leading the ‘85 team to a District 10 runner-up finish, first ever playoff game for the school.
Denny served as assistant coach at Sharon for four different periods, helping the team win numerous league and district championships. Those teams went 51-7 in winning Keystone Football League titles from 1988-92.
He also served as football assistant at Meadville, Hickory and Wilmington, including teams that again won league and/or district crowns.
As head baseball coach at Kennedy Catholic, Sharon and Wilmington high schools, his teams won more than 125 games. At Kennedy for 4 years they were all winning seasons, copping the Mercer County Athletic Conference crown in 1978-79. In ‘78 he was named county Coach of the Year.
As head baseball coach at Sharon, his teams won county titles from 1981-82 and he was county Coach of the Year in 1981. He also coached baseball at Wilmington, leading the team to the WPIAL playoffs.
Denny, a member of the Mercer County Hall of Fame Board, formerly served as women’s basketball coach at Edinboro’s Shenango Valley Campus.
He coached Little League and Midget football.
