HERSHEY — Is there any kind of math equation where 3 can equal 4? Reynolds High wrestling fans certainly hope so.
Reynolds has 3 remaining contenders as it goes after a 4th straight team title at the PIAA State Class AA Individual Championships at Hershey Giant Center. During Thursday’s action the Raiders advanced Mason Beckman (112), Cody Kelly (125) and Corey Brown (130) into this morning’s quarterfinals, which start at 8 a.m. The tourney semis will begin at 6:30 p.m.
“If we do well and things fall into place, we’d have a chance,” said Raiders’ coach Brian Hills of his team’s hopes with only a trio of wrestlers left. “We’re up against some very good teams in Shady Side and Burrell and I think they probably did well (Thurs)day. Right now we’re just concerning ourselves with the individuals and moving them as far as they can go.”
It was a good opening day for Mercer County, with 10 of the 16 entries moving on to the quarterfinals. Others advancing are: Greenville’s Coty Burnett (119) and Justin Ferguson (145); Sharon’s Jordan Moss (135); Grove City’s Caleb Kolb (160); Mercer’s Justin Angermeier (171), and Sharpsville’s Justin Buchanan (215) and Phil Catrucco (285).
Still alive in the consolation rounds are: Sharpsville’s Chris Rowe (125), Hickory’s Mike Vernille (135) and John Apa (215).
Eliminated with 2 losses Thursday were: Reynolds’ Adam Matthews (112), Commodore Perry’s Tyler Smith (152) and Grove City’s Nick Miller (189).
Following are details on the individual efforts:
Advancing to quarterfinals
ä Reynolds’ Beckman (103) had to resort to his strong riding skills in his opening 1-0 victory over a defensive Charlie Bise of East Pennsboro. Beckman escaped early in the 2nd stanza for his point, then rode out Bise in the the final frame, almost turning him twice with far-side cradles.
This morning Beckman (46-7) will take on Athens sophomore David White (41-2). “He may have wrestled a little tentative,” said Hills of his freshman ace, “but he knows how to win those close ones.”
ä Greenville junior Burnett has a goal of finishing much higher than his 5th place last season and is off to a great start. He dominated his opening foe, Devin Cook of Bedford 12-3, building a 10-1 lead after 2 periods. Burnett (35-5) meets a familiar foe, David Fogle (35-2) in the quarters. Burnett beat Fogle in OT last year in the 5th-place bout at 112. “Coty looked great,” beamed Greenville coach John Reynolds. “He’s loose as a goose. He’ll have a tough one with Fogle. Fogle’s a straight-on wrestler, while Coty is unorthadox. They’re polar opposites.”
ä Two-time state place-winner Kelly (125) of Reynolds had a battle in his opener with Jarod Solosky of Saucon Valley. Kelly led 3-0 after 2 periods, but was taken down to narrow the gap. Kelly escaped and held on for a 4-2 victory. “The kid may have taken him out of his match a little bit,” said Hills, “but Cody can win like that when he needs to.” The Raider junior (44-2) will face Ryan Link (44-2) this morning.
ä Reynolds’ Brown (130) made his 1rst start a state a good one as he defeated Mitch Spencer of Avella, 8-5. Brown gave up an early takedown, but came back to tie the match at 3 after 2 periods. In the final period, Brown (42-7) notched an escape and 2 takedowns to pull away for the victory. “Corey stepped it up when he had to,” said Hills. “He hung in there, waited for his chance and then took it to that other kid. That was a good win for him. That kid had some talent, as I like to say, ‘He was long and strong.’”
The Raider senior faces unbeaten Colin Shober (47-0) of Schuylkill Valley in the quarterfinals.
ä Sharon’s undefeated Moss (40-0) had a slight scare in the 2nd period when he took injury time after getting bounced on his head by Logan Sheldon of Hyndman. But Moss, who was leading 2-0 at the time, came back strong with an escape and takedown. He then rode out the final period for a 5-0 triumph. Sharon coach Dave Ciafre turned down an opportunity to comment about his wrestler’s solid performance. The Tiger sophomore, who finished 4th at 130 last season, takes on Zack Wolford (39-3) of Hanover in the quarters.
ä Greenville’s unbeaten Ferguson (43-0) mounted a 7-0 lead against T.J. Polacek of Westmont-Hilltop Thursday, but had to hold on for a 9-8 triumph. “He wrestled real well those first two periods,” said coach Reynolds, “but he felt sick to his stomach in that last period. But it doesn’t matter how you win; it’s that you win. The name of the game is to keep advancing down here.” Ferguson will face Midd-West’s Sam Shirey (36-7) in the quarters.
ä Grove City junior Kolb gained experience as a state qualifier last season and it helped as he notched a nip-and-tuck 7-5 victory in his opener against John Lesher of Upper Dauphin. The Eagle had the lead the whole way after a 1st-period takedown, but Lesher cut the margin to 5-4 late in the 3rd period before a Kolb takedown clinched the victory.
Kolb (35-4) will face Northeast Region champ Nick Venditti (42-3) this morning. “We’re going to wrestle the next one a little differently,” said Grove City coach Marty Ruley. “We’re going to get more aggressive. We let him get that one out of the way.”
ä It was the 1st time here for Mercer’s Angermeier, but he wrestled like a veteran. He controlled Bobby Mort of Huntingdon for a 4-0 victory. “He wrestled really well,” said Mercer coach Rick Whenry. “When it’s you’re first time down here, you just want to get that first one in the bag. That was his kind of match; he’s a six-minute guy. He’s not a pinner.”
In this morning’s quarters Angermeier faces Line Mountain’s Jon Fausey (23-0), state runner-up last season. “It should be a good one,” said Whenry.
ä Sharpsville junior Buchanan was trailing 1-0 after 2 periods, but locked up Fred Holly of Pottstown and decked him in 4:39 in his 1st state start. “The other kid wanted Justin to wrestle his kind of match, but we told Justin to slow it down and keep his cool,” said Devils’ coach Butch Scott. “We knew he could get a reverse in that last period, but he got the fall. That was great.”
This morning, Buchanan (27-4) will face Southwest Region champ Dan Conley (28-4) of Burgettstown.
ä Blue Devils unbeaten heavyweight Phil Catrucco had no trouble in his opener, taking down Ethan Covalt of Penns Valley and pinning him in 1:07. In the quarters, Catrucco (39-0) will tangle with East Juniata’s Zeke Pyle (34-4). “Phil is looking great,” said Scott. “His goal is to win it all, but he’s taking it one match at a time. All three of my guys have been really focused all year.”
Alive in consolations
ä Sharpsville’s Rowe fell behind 7-0 after 1 period and never got back into the match in his 1st start against Penn Argyl’s Austin Williams, falling 12-2. In the consys, the Blue Devil senior faced Warrior Run’s Bryson Brooke and pulled out an exciting 8-6 win with a reversal in the last 20 seconds. “There was no shame losing to that first kid, he’s tough,” said Scott. “But Chris is focused and I think he can medal.”
Rowe will face the loser of a quarterfinal match between Raider Kelly and Link.
ä Hickory junior Vernille suffered a nail-biter, 3-2 loss in his opener against Troy’s Devin Leiby, but came back strong in the consys to beat Littletown’s Phil Macy, 12-9. “That was a tough loss, he could have won that,” said Hickory coach Carl Wombacker. “But he came back and did what he had to do in the second match. That kid was a region champ, so that was a good win.”
Vernille will face the loser of a quarterfinal match between Sharon’s Moss and Wolford.
ä Hickory senior Apa was pinned in his opener by Justin Peterson of Palmerton in 1:12, but bounced back in the consys to top John Kazalas of Keystone Oaks, 7-3. “John got caught in that first match,” said Wombacker, “but he was able to come back, get his head into it, and win the second one. I hope they both can win another and get a medal.”
Apa will take on the loser of Port Allegany’s Dylan Major, who beat Apa in the region final, and Dan Winnie of Danville.
Eliminated with 2 losses
ä Raiders’ freshman Matthews ran into a tough foe in his opener, Evan Henderson of United, and dropped a 12-1 major decision. In the consys, it didn’t get any easier as Matthews had to face last year’s 103 state champ Frank Martellotti of Shady Side. Matthews put up a real battled, but bowed 4-2 and finished the season at 29-17. “Adam had a tough draw,” said Hills, “but he’s only a freshman and getting experience down here is very important.”
ä Commodore Perry junior Smith (34-11) went 2-and-out, dropping both matches after scoring the 1st takedown. He bowed by fall to Ethan Laudermilch of North East Bradford in 3:32, then was eliminated 8-3 by Charles Walls of Littlestown. “I’m disappointed, as I’m sure he is,” said CP coach Kevin Drew. “But he’s been a bright spot for us this year among other bright spots. He has a District 10 championship that no one can take away. And I don’t think there are too many people who expected him to be down here this year. Hopefully, he’ll be back down here next year and bring a few friends.”
ä Grove City junior Miller (30-14) saw his season end. He dropped his opener in overtime to Ammon Swisher of Hughesville, 7-5. Miller led 5-4 in regulation, but gave up an escape with 3 seconds left. “That was a match he had to win,” said disappointed coach Ruley. In the consolations, Miller lost to Tyler Stambaugh of of Bermudian Springs.
