ALTOONA – The Penn State Shenango women’s volleyball team didn’t hold back on Saturday, taking on two highly-respected teams in the NCAA Div. III world in their historic return to the volleyball floor.

Playing in their first matches in the modern era, Penn State Shenango took on Chatham University and lost in three sets (25-15, 26-24, 25-15) and then battled Penn State Altoona on their home court, Alder Arena, also losing in three sets (25-4, 25-20, 25-15).

Coach Nicole Nych’s Lady Lions fought valiantly with Katie Richards (West Middlesex High) posting 11 kills in the second match, with Jenna Bournemiss collecting 10 assists and 8 digs and Ashley Haylett with 7 assists and 6 digs. Donique Marcella (Kennedy Catholic High) chipped in with 10 digs as well in the second match.

Against Chatham, Olivia Vogel (Brookfield High) had 10 kills, Bournemiss had 17 assists, Robin Reynolds (Grove City High) had 15 digs and Marcella collected 10 digs.

The Lady Lions return to action next Sunday to open their conference schedule at Penn State Mont Alto. Opening serve is set for 2 p.m. in Heiges Fieldhouse on the campus of Shippensburg University.

Prior to the home-opener on Sept. 14 versus Penn State Beaver, the Penn State Shenango athletics department will host a tailgate party in the parking lot of the Buhl Recreation Center. RSVP Robin Criswell in the athletics office at (724) 983-2817 if you plan to attend.
