SHARON – The Reynolds Raiders are well on their way to the 25th District 10 Class AA title in school history after the opening night of wrestling at Sharon High.
The Raiders advanced 9 matmen to the semifinals and totaled 94 points. Greenville is a distant second with 47.5.
“I’m happy,” said Reynolds Coach Casey Taylor. “This is a tough tournament.”
Reynolds senior Beau Bayless (120) continues his drive for a 4th straight crown, while 4 other defending champs advanced. They include Bayless’ teammate Gary Steen (106): Greenville’s Jacob McMaster (220); Saegertown’s Kenny Kiser (138); Conneaut Area’s Peyton Hearn (160).
The wrestling resumes at 9:15 this morning. Consolation finals for 3rd, 5th and 7th will begin at 4 p.m. with the parade of champions at 6. The top eight wrestlers in each weight advance to the regional tourney next weekend at Sharon.
Following is a look at how the weight classes look heading into today’s action:
106 – Defending district and state champ Gary Steen (30-1) of Reynolds needed only 28 seconds for his first match and in the semis will take on Jack Martinec (22-2) of Cochranton. The finals could be a rematch of the section finals if Commodore Perry sophomore Ashten Armagost (21-5) can get past Gen. McLane’s Section 1 champ Hunter Robison (29-4).
113 – Cambridge Springs’ Ayden Miller pulled off an upset when he beat Jamestown’s section champ Chase McLaughlin, 5-2, in the quarterfinals and will take on Logan Jaquay of Eisenhower in the semis. Section 1 champ Andrew Brest of Gen. McLane also had a battle with Reynolds’ Cole Bayless, scoring a takedown in the final minute for a 2-1 triumph.
120 – Raider senior Beau Bayless began his drive for his 4th D-10 crown with a fall in 1:38 and will tangle with Cochranton’s Shane Peterson in the semis. Section 1 winner Alex Kightlinger will face Titusville’s Hunter Thompson. Thompson dominated Kightlinger in the semis last season at 113, 10-0.
126 – Another section winner fell here as Hickory’s Carter Gill whipped Saegertown’s Jaeden Reagle, 8-2. Gill will take on Reynolds’ Andrew Ischo, who topped Gill, 11-2, last week. Greenville’s Section 2 champ Bryce Knauf (36-3) won by fall in his opener and today takes on William Burgess (26-3).
132 – Reynolds’ Kaeden Berger had a real battle with Mathew Leehan of Gen. McLane before pulling out a 6-3 decision in overtime. Berger will face Northwestern’s John Wheeler (29-3) in the semis. The Raider beat Wheeler twice last year in this tournament. On the other side of the bracket, Cambridge Springs’ unbeaten Tye Varndell (34-0) faces Dawson Bartholomew of Saegertown.
138 – As expected, returning champion Kenny Kiser (33-3) will take on Reynolds’ Rocco Bartolo (25-10) in one semi, while Mercer’s Alex Chess (32-3) tangles with Fort LeBoeuf’s Joel Huck (27-12).
145 – No Mercer County area matmen made the semis here where Northwestern’s Caiden Mooney meets West Davenport of Conneaut Area and Marshall Marfinetz of Girard faces Gen. McLane’s Jackson Spires. Marfinetz pinned Section 2 champ Jarrod Rodgers of Titusville Friday.
152 – It’s an all Mercer County semis here. Mason Karpinski (39-2) of Greenville faces Daiveon Say of Grove City, while Sully Allen (31-1) of Sharon meets Gage Musser of Commodore Perry. Musser knocked off Section 1 champ Dylan Muscarella of North East. None of the semifinalists met last week at sections.
160 – Grove City’s Tyler Greer topped Section 1 winner Jason Bratt of Harbor Creek, 5-3, and faces Hunter Thompson of Reynolds in a rematch of last week’s semis won by the Raider, 8-2. Section 2 champ Peyton Hearn (31-2) of Conneaut Area takes on Sharon’s Luke Gaston. Hearn downed Thompson, 11-8, in the finals last weekend.
170 – Brady Gentile (36-3) missed the sport last season with an injury and is a man on a mission as he takes on Marshall Vantassel of Union City. The Trojan senior handled Vantassel, 9-3, at the D-10 Duals. Section 1 title-holder James Laird of Gen. McLane will meet Slippery Rock’s Elijah Hilliard.
182 – Defending champ Gavin Henry (33-3) will meet Franklin’s Holden Cook, while Slippery Rock’s section winner Kaleb Kamerer will square off with JD McFadden of Maplewood.
195 – Section 2 champ Parker Harver of Titusville moved on to face Eisenhower freshman Cael Black, but the northern champ Domonic Viscuso fell to Austin Kelly of Conneaut. Kelly will go against Braydon Herbster of Reynolds, who edged Greenville’s Barrett Gentile, 5-1, in the quarterfinals.
220 – Defending champ Jacob McMaster (39-0) of Greenville had a short night as he scored a 21-second fall and will meet Maplewood’s Joey King today. Section 1 winner Joseph Bauer of Eisenhower faces Reynolds’ Wyatt Owen.
285 – Max Wills of Greenville, the defending champion, suffered a severe ankle injury and had to default to Section 1 winner Matt Long of Union City. Long will meet Josh Nettles of Franklin. Reynolds’ Derek Skeehan moved to the semis against Girard’s Jordan Schell, who topped Sharon’s Jordan Wilson 2-1 in overtime.
