Sharpsville head coach Paul Piccirilli and his coaching staff pose for a photo as they are honored before the start of Friday’s game against Greenville at McCracken Field.

Coach Josh Mull’s Reynolds High Raiders clinched the Region 1 championship outright on Friday with a 41-0 win at Mercer. It is the program’s first league title in 19 years.

Also in Region 1 play Friday, West Middlesex defeated Kennedy Catholic, 26-0. In a Region 2 contest, Sharpsville beat Greenville, 24-14, at McCracken Field. In Region 3 action, Slippery Rock picked up a thrilling 17-14 overtime win against Grove City.

Three area teams are in action tonight: Wilmington (4-0) hosts Farrell (3-1) in Region 2 play; Lakeview (2-2) travels to Albion to battle Northwestern (4-0) in a Region 4 contest, and Brookfield (4-1) opens the OHSAA Div. VI playoffs by hosting Oberlin (0-5).

Following are staff reports from Friday’s games:

• Sharpsville 24, Greenville 14 – At Sharpsville’s McCracken Field, the Blue Devils improved to 2-3 on a night Coach Paul Piccirilli and his coaching staff were honored for years of dedication.

Piccirilli, a Sharpsville graduate, has been head coach for 25 seasons and he and his coaching staff have produced 200-plus wins and a PIAA championship in 1997.

Win No. 212 came against a Greenville squad that fell to 0-5 on Friday.

The Trojans took an early 7-0 lead on a 2-yard TD run by Mason Dickens and Rasce Stefanowicz tacked on the kick.

Sharpsville cut the lead to 7-3 on a 32-yard field goal by Liam Campbell and then went up 10-7 on a 4-yard TD run by Chris Roth, along with Campbell’s PAT.

The Blue Devils increased their lead to 16-7 on a 1-yard run by Danny Henwood and Campbell converted the kick to make it 17-7.

Greenville answered with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Ritzert to Cole Karpinski and Stefanowicz’s kick, which cut the lead to 17-14.

Sharpsville closed out the scoring with 10:58 left on the clock on a 12-yard TD run by Henwood. Campbell booted the extra-point kick to make it 24-14.

Henwood rushed for 190 yards on 27 carries. The Devils only attempted 3 passes (one completion, one interception). Starting quarterback Stephen Tarnoci didn’t play. He suffered a concussion against Farrell last week.

Ritzert went 6-of-10 for 153 yards for Greenville. Rufus Byler pulled in 4 catches for 129 yards. Dickens led the ground game with 13 carries for 46 yards.

Note: Piccirilli’s staff includes “Chunky” Baker and Offensive Coordinator Lenny Grandy (25 years each), Pat Campoli and Fred Sablack (24 apiece), Rich Pavone (22), Steve Summers (21), Brent Pavone (15), Defensive Coordinator Doug Levis (14), Bill Henwood (10), Dennis Bornes (6), and Tim Scarvel (2).

• West Middlesex 26, Kennedy Catholic 0 – At West Middlesex, Big Reds’ senior quarterback Ty Tate and junior running back Ian Smith both scored twice as the Reds improved to 3-2 with the Region 1 win over the Golden Eagles (0-5).

Tate gave WM a 6-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion run failed.

Tate scored on a 1-yard run in the 2nd quarter as the Big Reds went up 12-0. Tate then threw a 2-point conversion pass to Chris Smith for a 14-0 advantage.

Ian Smith scored twice in the 3rd quarter on runs of 3 and 10 yards.

Tate was 4-of-14 for 15 yards with one interception and rushed for 65 yards on 8 carries. Ian Smith had 89 rushing yards on 13 carries. Alex Rea caught one pass for 24 yards.

For Kennedy Catholic, Nick Ondo was 2-of-7 for 22 yards with 1 pick. Kole Tarary (11-10) was the top rusher and Sky’ler Thomas caught 1 pass for 19 yards.

• Reynolds 41, Mercer 0 – At Mercer, the Raiders captured the Region 1 title outright with the win over the Mustangs.

Reynolds took a 6-0 lead with 2:10 left to play in the 1st quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by Cole Toy. Dreyvin Livingston booted the extra-point kick to make it 7-0.

The Raiders increased their lead to 14-0 by scoring with only one second left in the 1st half. Toy scored on a 1-yard run and Livingston tacked on the PAT.

Reynolds went up 21-0 when Jalen Wagner returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half and raced 87 yards for a touchdown. Livington booted the extra-point.

A turnover (Mitchell Mason fumble recovery) set up the Raiders’ next score later in the 3rd quarter – a 1-yard run by quarterback Brayden McCloskey. Livingston converted the kick and Reynolds led 28-0.

Reynolds tacked on 2 more touchdowns in the 4th quarter. Toy reached the end zone for the 3rd time on a 15-yard run and Hayden McLaughlin added a 10-yard TD run.

Toy rushed for 156 yards on 26 carries while McCloskey was 4-of-9 for 30 yards with 1 interception. Luca Tofani (1-16) was the leading receiver.

Mercer QB Ethan Wiley was 7-of-28 for 72 yards with 2 picks. Nathan Haines (1-18) was the top rusher and Luca Tofani (1-16) the leading receiver.

• Slippery Rock 17, Grove City 14 (OT) -- At Troy-Alan Stadium, senior placekicker Alex Duffalo booted a 27-yard field goal in overtime to help the Rockets snap a 6-game losing streak to their Route 15 rivals.

Duffalo was pivotal in getting Slippery Rock into position to stun Grove City.

After the Eagles failed to score on its possession in overtime, the Rockets were backed up after a sack and running play. Slippery Rock coach Larry Wendereusz opted to send out Duffalo and the field goal unit for a trick play that sent Duffalo – a converted soccer player – around left end for 13 yards and set up his own heroics.

Grove City opened the extra session with possession and gained one yard before back-to-back incompletions to Zack Martin and Gavin Lutz. GC coach Sam Mowrey chose to send out kicker John Hake for a short field goal try, but it was blocked by Ethan Plesakov.

After a scoreless first 20 minutes of action, Grove City running back Curtis Hovis got the Eagles on the board with a 40-yard touchdown run late in the first half.

Slippery Rock knotted the score at 7-all on a Shane Thompson 26-yard scamper in the third quarter.

Grove City took a 14-7 lead on a Zach Rodgers to Zack Martin 18-yard scoring strike with just under 3 minutes left in the contest.

Plesakov notched the game-tying score on a diving grab of a William Mokel pass from 5 yards out.

Mokel completed 24-of-44 passes for 279 yards and a score. John Sabo pulled in 6 receptions for a game-high 120 yards, while Plesakov and Thompson each had 5 catches. Thompson had 103 yards of total offense (49 rushing, 54 receiving).

For Grove City, Hovis led the way with 125 yards rushing on 25 carries, while Lutz rushed for 55 yards and caught 5 passes for another 40. Rodgers completed 13-of-26 passes for 157 yards, a score and an interception in his first varsity start at quarterback.

Region 3’s final playoff spot – either the Eagles (2-3, 2-3) or the Rockets (2-3, 2-3) – won’t be decided until Week 6. Grove City hosts Sharon (1-4) on Friday and Slippery Rock travels to Hickory the following day – Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin.
