SHARON – The Northwest AA Regional Wrestling Championships on Friday night is like the proverbial “calm before the storm.”

While there were few upsets during the opening night, most District champions advanced as well as all the defending champions.

The tournament resumes at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, with consolation finals for 3rd and 5th set for 3:30 p.m. and parade of champions at 5:30. The top 4 finisher advance to the state tourney.

Beau Bayless (120) of Reynolds continues his drive for a 4th region crown, while teammate Gary Steen (106) and Greenville’s Jacob McMasters each go for their second. Saegertown’s Tye Varndell (132) is on pace to win a third title, while other defending champs are Kane’s Alec English (160) and Union City’s Gavin Henry (182).

Reynolds, seeking the 22nd regional crown in school history is off to a good start. The Raiders made a powerful showing as they moved 10 wrestlers into the semifinals and have a team score of 94 points. Greenville is second with 45 and has 5 in the semis. Union City is third with 31 points.

Following is a look at how the weight classes shake out:

106 – Defending region and state champ Gary Steen (35-1) and D-9 champion Owen Reinsel (31-3) of Brookville both scored first-period falls in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Steen will face Port Allegany’s Bryent Johnson (22-5), while Reinsel meets Hunter Robison (31-5) of Gen. McLane. Johnson was 4th at this weight last year.

113 – Reynolds junior Cole Bayless (22-10) knocked off District 9 champ Trenton Rupp of Redbank Valley, 11-2, and faces familiar foe Andrew Brest (34-5) of Gen. McLane. Brest edged Bayless, 2-1, in the D-10 quarters. On the other side of the bracket, D-10 champ Logan Jaquay (32-3) squares off with Harbor Creek’s Connor Pierce.

120 – Reynolds senior ace Beau Bayless (34-7) had a 58-second fall Friday and could be headed for a finals rematch for a third straight week with Hunter Thompson (36-3) of Titusville. But first in the semis, Bayless meets Alex Kightlinger of Saegertown, while Thompson tangles with Braedon Johnson (32-1) of Port Allegany, the D-9 winner.

126 – The Reynolds romps continued here as Andrew Ischo (28-9) won by fall and will meet District 9 champ Andrew Glasl (32-1) of Brockway. Glasl beat the Raider in the semis last year, 5-2. On the other side of the bracket, D-10 winner Bryce Knauf (39-3) continued his impressive tournament run with a pin and faces William Burgess (30-4) of Union City. Knauf topped Burgess, 6-4, in the district semis.
