Beau Bayless

Reynolds’ Beau Bayless pinned Port Allegany’s Braeden Johnson in the 120-pound championship finals on Saturday at Sharon High School to win his fourth region championship.

SHARON – Another strong contingent of Mercer County area wrestlers punched their tickets to Hershey Saturday during the Northwest AA Regional Wrestling Championships at Sharon High.

Eighteen local matmen qualified for the PIAA State Championships which start Thursday in Chocolatetown.

Heading the way as usual for the area are the Reynolds Raiders who will be taking 9 to state after winning the 22nd regional team crown in school history with 198 points. Greenville, which qualified 5, was second with 115S.

“I’m pretty happy,” said Reynolds Coach Casey Taylor. “You hope to get as many as you can to state. I’m very proud to be their coach. It was nerve-wracking though, there were a lot of dogfights. It’s tough competition here. But even though there were some tough battles, there was good sportsmanship.

“Winning that region trophy is a great accomplishment for the guys. You never take them for granted.”

Raider Beau Bayless (120) led the local champions list as he notched his fourth straight regional crown. Teammate Gary Steen (106) won his second as did Greenville’s Jacob McMaster (220). Also climbing to the top of the medal stand were: Greenville’s Bryce Knauf (126) and Brady Gentile (170); Sharon’s Sully Allen (152).

Other area state qualifiers were:

2nd – Reynolds’ Rocco Bartolo (138) and Derek Skeehan (285); Greenville’s Mason Karpinski (152).

3rd – Kaeden Berger (132) and Wyatt Owen (220) of Reynolds; Alex Chess (138) of Mercer; Commodore Perry’s Gage Musser (152); Kalob Kamerer (182) of Slippery Rock.

4th – Cole Bayless (113), Hunter Thompson (160) and Cole Toy (170) of Reynolds; Max Wills (285) of Greenville.

Saegertown’s Tye Varndell (132) headed the group of other champions as he won his third crown. Kane’s Alec English (160) and Gavin Henry (182) won a second straight. Other winners were Eisenhower’s Logan Jaquay (113) and Cael Black (195); Saegertown’s Kenny Kiser (138); Northwestern’s Caiden Mooney (145); Colby Whitehill (285).

Following is a look at the finals matches:

106 – Reynolds sophomore sensation Gary Steen (37-1), defending state champ, faced freshman ace Owen Reinsel (32-4) from Brookville. Steen grabbed an early takedown and rode out the first period. He picked up a 3-point near fall in the second for a 5-0 front. The Raider notched a pair of takedowns in the final frame en route to a 9-1 major decision.

113 – This was a rematch of the District 10 finals between Eisenhower junior Logan Jaquay and Gen. McLane’s Andrew Brest. Jaquay (34-3) won last week, 6-4, and built on that with a 9-2 victory Saturday over the Lancer senior (35-6).

120 – Beau Bayless (36-7) went for a fourth crown against Port Allegany sophomore Braeden Johnson who came into the tourney with a 31-1 record. But it was no contest. After no takedown in the opening period, Bayless escaped in the second, then picked up a takedown. He locked in his inescapable cradle and pinned Johnson in 3:51.

“The fourth win puts him in a select group of kids and his name is etched in history forever,” said a proud Coach Taylor. “I love his poise and composure. Everybody seems to be coming up with game plans to try to beat him. But I told him, once he gets on top he can finish.”

126 – Greenville senior Bryce Knauf (41-3) has won sections and districts titles, but had his shortest finals bout of them all Saturday. His match against Brockway’s Anthony Glasl (33-2) was over before it started as Glasl took an injury default.

“Bryce was a district qualifer last year and this year he’s a region champ,” praised Greenville Coach John Reynolds. “He’s a super kid.”

132 – Cambridge Springs’ Tye Varndell (39-0) copped his third region title against a familiar foe, John Wheeler (33-4). Varndell beat Wheeler in sections and districts finals and this week took a 9-3 victory. Varndell beat Reynolds’ Kaeden Berger, 3-1, in the semis in a tough battle.

138 – Reynolds’ Rocco Bartolo (32-12), who edged D-10 champ Alex Chess of Mercer, 2-0, in the semis went up against Saegertown’s Kenny Kiser in the finals. Kiser (37-4) grabbed a first-period takedown then led 4-0 at the third-period turn. He scored a takedown in the last period for a 6-2 triumph.

145 – For a third straight week, Gen. McLane’s Jackson Spires (13-4) and Northwestern’s Caiden Mooney (30-7) clashed in a finals match. They were 1-1 coming in, but the rubber match belonged to Mooney, 10-6.

152 – Another finals meeting for three weeks here as Greenville’s Mason Karpinski (43-3) tangled with Sharon’s Sully Allen. Karpinski, won the last two weeks, but fell behind 2-1 after one period. The Trojan senior tied it with an escape in the second. Allen (35-2) escaped early in the third and notched a late match takedown to win 5-2.

“He got it when he needed it,” said Sharon Coach Dave Ciafre. “We were getting closer each week and they were banging heads for three weeks. I’m proud of him, he kept his composure. He’s a very hard worker, he knows what he wants and he goes after it. He’s good enough to place next week.”

160 – For a second straight year, Kane’s Alec English (32-1) and Conneaut Area’s Peyton Hearn (36-3) met in the region finals and for a second straight year, English came out on top. He won in overtime last year, but this time took a regulation 8-5 victory.

170 – Greenville’s Brady Gentile (41-3) is a man on a mission. After missing last season with an injury, the Trojan senior has been driving through the tournaments with win after win. In the finals against Ethan Finch of Sheffield, Gentile dominated from the opening takedown on his way to a 14-7 rout.

182 – Defending champ Gavin Henry (38-3) of Union City notched a quick takedown and added a 3-point near fall for an early 5-0 lead on Garrett McClintock (33-2) of Brockway. McClintock cut the lead with a takedown in the third period, but Henry won 5-2, to become the first-ever 2-time champion for the Bears program.

195 – Senior Austin Kelly of Conneaut Area and Eisenhower freshman Cael Black squared off here in a “Cinderella” story. Kelly was only 6th at the D-10 tourney, while Black was 5th and both beat district champs to get to the title tilt. After regulation ended 1-1 and no takedown in the first period, Black reversed in the second. Kelly escaped in the 2nd tiebreaker, couldn’t score and Black won 3-2.

220 – Greenville’s unbeaten man-mountain Jacob McMaster (44-0) met Eisenhower’s Joseph Bauer in the finals for a second straight week. The Trojan senior grabbed a first-period takedown and reversed in the second. In the third, McMaster scored takedown after takedown against the defensive Ike senior for a 16-6 victory.

“It was a phenomental weekend for us,” said Greenville Coach Reynolds after McMasters did his thing. “It was a milestone for our program and we’re taking five kids to state. Mason wrestled well and lost, but it’s hard to wrestle the same kid three weeks in a row. Brady put on a takedown clinic.”

285 – Colby Whitehill (35-0) pinned his way through the tournament, decking Reynolds’ Derek Skeehan in the finals in 55 seconds. Greenville’s Max Wills who left districts on crutches with a badly sprained ankle, limped his way through regions but finished fourth to advance to state.

“That kid has grit,” said Greenville Coach Reynolds.
