Stevens-Luchey

Sharpsville’s Chayse Stevens-Luchey carries the ball against Hickory last week at McCracken Field. Friday’s Sharpsville vs. Iroquois game reportedly ended early after the senior halfback/defensive back suffered a bad leg injury.

Week 2 of the high school football schedule was light as four of the game’s on the docket were battles between local teams.

Also Friday, Grove City beat Greenville, 35-10, in its home-opener at Forker Field; Reynolds defeated Slippery Rock, 25-21; Sharpsville shut out Iroquois, 21-0; Mercer fell to Northwestern, 28-0, and Brookfield opened the season with a 35-28 win at McDonald.

West Middlesex travels to Stoneboro Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Lakeview.

Following are staff reports from Friday’s games:

• Grove City 35, Greenville 10 – At Forker Field in Grove City, the Eagles ran their regular season winning streak to 20 games and improved to 2-0 for the fourth straight season with the lopsided inter-regional battle.

Grove City senior Colby Nelson – who eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the second straight game in his first season as a starter – finished with touchdown runs of 5, 29, 3 and 5 yards on his way to a game-high 118 yards on 21 totes.

The Eagles’ other score came at the end of a 3-play, 62-yard drive in just 14 seconds at the end of the first half on a 30-yard strike from Logan Breese to Daiveon Say.

After spotting Grove City a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, the Trojans (1-1) cut their deficit in half with a Levi Swartz 2-yard burst. Justin Stuyvesant’s 21-yard field goal with 36 seconds left in the second quarter pulled Greenville to within 21-10.

For Grove City, Breese completed 8-of-10 passes for 131 yards, a score and 2 interceptions, while Say hauled in 3 aerials for 55 yards. Defensively, Zack Martin (11 tackles), Zach Rodgers (9), Curtis Hovis (8) and Kendel Hollen (7) paced the Eagles.

Despite 4 turnovers, the Eagles still managed to outgain Greenville 373-251 and held a slight 16-14 edge in first downs.

Isaac Sasala (85), Kaleb Acuff (81) and Levi Swartz (71) paced a Trojan ground game – Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin.

• Sharpsville 21, Iroquois 0 – At McCracken Field, the Blue Devils (1-1) rebounded from last week’s season-opening loss to Hickory with the win over the Braves (0-2).

The game ended early after Sharpsville senior Chayse Stevens-Luchey reportedly suffered a serious leg injury.

Sharpsville took a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Danny Henwood to Jadan Townsend. Gideon Jones booted the extra-point kick.

The Devils went up 14-0 in the 2nd quarter on a 54-yard TD pass from Kaleb Gorichky to Bujalski. Jones added the PAT.

Sharpsville went up 21-0 in the 3rd frame on a 5-yard TD run by Stevens-Luchey and Jones’ kick.

Henwood went 3-of-6 for 61 yards for Sharpsville. Stevens-Luchey rushed for 99 yards on 15 carries. Townsend led the receivers with the TD catch for 43 yards.

The Blue Devils haven’t lost a home game to an Erie County team since a 31-9 loss to Strong Vincent in 1988.

• Northwestern 28, Mercer 0 – At Mercer, the Mustangs fell to 1-1 on the season with the inter-region loss to the Wildcats (1-1).

The Mustangs couldn’t get much going offensively as they were held to a total of 86 yards by the visitors.

The Wildcats picked up 304 total yards.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since the District 10 Class AA championship game in 1993. That game was won by NW, 7-6.

• Reynolds 25, Slippery Rock 21 – At Transfer, Coach Josh Mull’s Raiders moved to 2-0 with an impressive win over the Rockets.

Slippery Rock fell to 1-1 with the loss.
