BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Farrell 63, Oil City 38 — At Oil City, the visiting Steelers staged a 25-point 3rd-period outburst, overwhelming the Oilers in the Region 5-AAA affair.

Farrell had forged to a 31-18 margin at intermission, before its 3rd-quarter spree.

Marsell Holden hit for a game-high 24 points for Farrell (12-0, 15-4) and Traphael Stubbs scored 18 as coach Roland Shannonhouse’s Steelers’ staged their 7th straight success.

Jake Davis delivered 11 points to emerge as Oil City’s lone double-digit scorer.

ä Hickory 59, Franklin 51 — At “The Castle” in Franklin, the visiting Hornets (10-2, 18-2) outscored the Knights 15-7 in the 2nd quarter to post the Region 5-AAA win.

Jordan Wilds buried 3 treys en route to a game-high 21 points. He also grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.

Also for Hickory, Jaymee Shephard had 13 points and dished out 6 assists, Elrico Jones contributed 11 markers and Matt Durisko ripped down 10 boards and had 4 steals.

Eric Caffrey posted 18 points to lead Franklin. Also, Tim Maleski and Smith had 10 points each.

ä Grove City 56, Meadville 53 — At “The House of Thrills” in Meadville, Kyle Perrine produced a 3-point field goal with 1:35 remaining, giving Grove City the go-ahead for good in the Region 5-AAA contest.

Perrine then punctuated his 13-point, 8-assist, 6-rebound performance by adding a late insurance free throw.

The game featured 7 stalemates and 14 lead changes. Grove City gained a 30-28 halftime lead, before the Bulldogs built a 44-42 lead through 3 quarters.

In addition to Perrine, Jon Anderson, Patrick Johnson and Jeff Hershberger contributed 15, 13 and 13 points, respectively, for the Eagles (5-7, 8-12), and Hershberger snared 7 caroms.

For Meadville and coach Norm Price, Adam Barba, Toney Phillips and Ray Hamilton had 17, 15 and 10 points, respectively. Barba bounded 8 times, as well. — Information submitted by Allied-News sports editor Corey J. Corbin.

ä Reynolds 65, Sharpsville 52 — At Transfer, the Raiders (8-0, 19-1) led 17-9 after the 1st frame and never looked back in posting the Region 2-AA victory, sweeping the regular-season home-and-home series.

Chris Laverty led Reynolds with 23 points and 5 assists while Russ Conley returned to the hardwood after being injured last Friday to add 13 markers.

“Russ has a compression fracture in his knee,” said Raiders’ coach Scott Weaver. “The doctor said he could play, but we only let him play a little over half the game.”

Josh Taylor led the Blue Devils (2-6, 7-13) with a game-high 24 points. Also, Chad Piccirilli registered 14 points.

ä Lakeview 51, Greenville 38 — At Stoneboro, the host Sailors secured the Region 2-AA win by outscoring Greenville 24-13 after intermission when the game was knotted at 25.

Dylan Bertin bucketed a game-high 21 points to lead Lakeview (4-4, 10-10), while Jones Philson fired in another 10.

Tyler Blaschak and Nate Houpt evenly divided 22 points for the Trojans (2-5, 6-13).

ä Wilimington 60, Mercer 40 — At the Hounds’ Pound, host Wilmingto won the Region 2-AA contest, assuming a 33-23 margin at intermission, then extending its edge to 44-28 through 3 periods.

Shane Wagner went for a game-high 17 points for Wilmington (6-2, 13-6), while Dallas Hartman and Ian Kelly evenly divided an additional 20 points.

Kory Stiger scored 15 for Mercer (1-6, 5-14), tossing in a trio of treys, but he was the Mustangs’ lone double-figure scorer.

ä Kennedy Catholic 64, Commodore Perry 29 — At Sheakleyville, the visiting Golden Eagles eased to the Region 1-A rout, claiming a 19-10 first-quarter lead and never trailing.

Mike Klaric’s career-high 20-point performance keyed Kennedy Catholic (8-0, 17-2), while Rocky Farmartino finished with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Jake Yatsko dished out 7 assists.

For Commodore Perry (0-7, 0-19), Ethan Milford mustered a dozen points.

ä West Middlesex 64, Rocky Grove 50 — At West Middlesex, the host Big Reds (5-3, 9-11) trailed 21-12 after the 1st quarter, 33-32 at halftime, 42-40 after 3, but outscored the Orioles 24-8 in the 4th to notch the Region 1-A win.

Kyle Allen poured in 19 points to lead the Big Reds while Ryan Chupak bucketed 15 and Marcus Murray added 14, which included 10-of-12 shooting from the charity stripe.

Travis Melhuish posted 14 points for Rocky Grove (4-4, 9-10) while Dylan Gravatt added 11 markers.

ä McDowell 71, George Junior Republic 49 — At Grove City, McDowell improved to 5-0 in Region 7-AAAA and 15-4 overall with a 22-point win over the Tigers (0-5, 8-10).

Mike Molnar (14) and Jason Keim (13) scored in double digits for the visitors.

Darius Napier led GJR with 14 points while Mike Lemon added a dozen markers.

Results of this game were not submitted in time for Saturday’s print edition of The Herald.

ä Campbell Memorial 75, Brookfield 40 — At Brookfield, the host Warriors were competitive until allowing the Red Devils to dictate the tempo of the All-American Conference Blue Tier tilt.

Campbell claimed a 10-9 lead after the opening period, experiencing problems with Brookfield’s zone. And when Ryan Shugarts shot for back-to-back 3-point buckets midway through the 2nd stanza, the Warriors were up 15-14.

But by the break Brookfield trailed 30-20 as Campbell’s quicksilver guard Jerahme Williams scored 7 points and Mike Tiliakos tallied 4.

During the 3rd period the Warriors were guilty of as many turnovers (9) as they committed during the entire 1st half. By the time Brookfield bench boss Tom Roskos requested a time with 4 minutes remaining the Red Devils’ dominance resulted in a 46-28 margin.

For Campbell Memorial (6-0, 11-3), Claxton Lebron, Williams and Dorian Jones and Nate Hodge scored 15, 13, 12 and 12 points, respectively, and Williams handed out a handful of assists. Lester Hughes snared 7 caroms as Campbell claimed a 29-27 edge on the glass.

Coach Brian Danilov’s Red Devils connected on 32 of 57 floor shots (56.1 percent), with no one player attempting more than 10 shots. Campbell committed only 9 turnovers.

For Brookfield (1-5, 3-12), Greg Hunkus had 9 points and Anthony Uberti and Matt Mulligan divided an additional 16 points, while Ross Latimer lent 7 rebounds. However the Warriors were guilty of 24 turnovers and connected on only 14 of 43 (32.5) field-goal attempts. — By Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.

ä Mathews 65, Jamestown 57 — At Vienna Center, Ohio, the host Mustangs mustered the non-league win by building a 50-38 bulge through 3 quarters, then holding off the Muskies in the final canto.

Greg Lumley led Mathews with 22 marker and Chris Morgan mustered another 16.

Justin Wells went for 20 points for Jamestown (3-16) and Tommy Shannon scored 11 while Nick Miller mustered 10.

SWIMMING

ä The Hickory High girls team improved to 8-4 on Thursday with a win over Slippery Rock. No score or details were reported to The Herald.

ä The Hickory boys are 4-8 and qualified for the District 10 championships in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:51.19. Three of the 4 swimmers, whose names were not submitted to The Herald, are 1st-time swimmers, according to Hickory coach Ron Turney.

“At the beginning of the year, I would have said that getting to districts was not likely in their first year,” said Turney. “At this time last year, the boys team only had one win.”
