HERMITAGE – Cole Frazier established a course record, but Hickory High’s cross country team suffered a 29-30 setback to perennial power Grove City.

Tuesday afternoon, Frazier covered the Delahunty Middle School course in a time of 16:0222. That bettered the mark set by former Grove City standout Jake Kildoo (16:16).

Frazier and Matthew Jordan (16:37) went 1-2 for Hickory (3-1); however, Gabe Nichols (16:45) notched 3rd and the visiting Eagles ended with seven top-10 place-winners.

“(The Hornets) all pushed and ran beautifully. It was their fourth five-thousand meter race in eight days,” noted Hickory Coach Patti Rodenbaugh.

Led by runner-up Ashleigh Stephenson (21:13), Hickory girls edged Grove City, 26-33. The visiting Lady Eagles’ Abby Steffler finished 1st in 20:59.

Hickory girls improved to 3-1 on the season.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

• Wilmington 15, Sharon 50 – At Buhl Farm Park, harriers competed on a 2,600-meter course, just 100 meters beyond PIAA’s minimum standard. The visiting Greyhounds swept the top 10 berths, led by the quintet of Dylan Lynch (9:50),  Akito Hatch (9:52), Tagg Walker (9:58), Beau Reed (10:22) and Henry Ochs (10:51).

• West Middlesex 16, Jamestown 47 – At West Middlesex, the host Big Reds raced to the win, led by winner Drake Muir (19:12.89).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

• Wilmington 15, Sharon 50 – At Buhl Farm Park, Wilmington’s Grace (10:14) and Emma Mason (11:09) went 1-2, just ahead of Sharon’s Gianna Labbiento (11:29) on the abbreviated 2,600-meter course.

• West Middlesex 15, Jamestown 50 – At West Middlesex, Lia Bartholomew (21:20.26) led the victorious Ms. Reds.

GIRLS TENNIS

• Hickory 3, Grove City 2 – At the Hickory High Tennis Center, the Hornets (7-1) moved into a 1st-place tie with the Eagles in Region 1 with a huge win.

Daphne Borowicz and Isabelle Frangakis picked up singles wins for Hickory while Emily Spielvogle and Hannah Beighley teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles for the Hornets.

For Grove City, Abby Aument won at third singles and Katie Feng-Cara Severson grabbed a win at first doubles.

“It was just a fantastic high school girls tennis match for all involved,” said Hickory Coach Ed Newmeyer. “After dropping an extremely back-and-forth first doubles match 7-5 and 7-6, the match was deadlocked 2-2 with the outcome in the hands of of the second doubles duo of senior Emily Spielvogle and sophomore Hannah Beighley playing against Grove City’s Lillian Conger and Jane Coulter. The girls split sets and with a 6-5 lead in the third, Emily served for the match and, fortunately for us, held serve for the win.”

• Kennedy Catholic 3, Greenville 2 – At Buhl Farm Park, the host Lady Golden Eagles eeked out the win. Lydia Grove and Andrea Suhar secured singles wins, as did the doubles duo of Alaina Suhar-Clarissa Ealy to key KC (2-4).

“Lydia was on. Lydia Grove was consistent in her play,” praised Kennedy Catholic Coach Todd Day.

Ella Hildebrand, at No. 2 singles, garnered Greenville’s win; the second doubles match was forfeited.

Megan Messina and Iresha Norris teamed up for a win at 2nd doubles for the Tigers.

Region 1 Mega-Match

Hickory clinched the Region 1 title on Tuesday with the win at Hickory VFW Golf Course.

Hickory shot a 236 as McKenzie Gustas fired a 76, Sasha Petrochko carded a 77 and Leah Benson had an 83.

Gustas won the Region 1 individual title with a 72.6 average. Petrochko was 2nd and Benson 3rd.

Hickory is hoping to win its 2nd straight District 10 team title. The Hornets won the program’s first last season with a win over Villa Maria Academy at The Country Club of Meadville. The Hornets had finished as runners-up the previous six seasons.

Grove City (295) finished 2nd on Tuesday, followed by Reynolds (299) and Conneaut Area (306). Sharpsville and West Middlesex had 2 golfers each.

Lindsey Martineau and Sabrina Devite both had hat tricks while Analise Hendrickson and Emma Hill had 2 goals each. Also scoring was Ava Krepp, Emily Huff, Reese Walker, Alexis Lambert, Camryn Kollar, Ashley Wignall, Annalee Gardner, Madison Dickinson, Mariah Gardner, Paige Buckwalter and Maria Mitchell.

Krepp, Walker, Emily Arblaster and Sarah Dieter had 3 assists each. Hendrickson had 2 assists and Martineau, Huff, Gardner, Dickinson and Anna Williams added 1 assist each.

Leah Gerstnecker posted the shutout in goal for the Hounds (2-1).

• Mercer 13, Sharpsville 0 – At the McCullough Run Sports Complex in South Py Twp., Peyton Miller fired in 3 goals and had an assist, Regan Dubiel had 2 goals and an assist and Julia Balaski added a pair of goals as the Lady M’s rolled.

Mallory White, Morgan Miller, Mackenzie Hughes, Katie Ellis, Lilly Davis, and Devyn Bailey also scored for Mercer.

Bailey Grossman earned the shutout in goal. Sharpsville’s goalie was Neva Turner.

• Hickory 5, Grove City 1 – At Hornet Stadium, Santina Masters had a hat trick to lead Hickory past the Lady Eagles.

Kayla Saylor scored on a penalty kick for the Hornets and Anna Rodenbaugh added the other goal. Ella Vance had 2 assists for Hickory.

• Slippery Rock 11, Greenville 0 – At Slippery Rock, Hannah Burtner, Isabelle Willison and Tory Hinchberger each had 2 goals as the Lady Rockets rolled.

Eve Miller, Amanda Lewis, Emma Hays, Olivia Rock and Reagan Suorsa scored the other goals for Slippery Rock.
