GIRLS BASKETBALL

• Grove City 44, Reynolds 19 – At Grove City, Coach Chris Burtch’s Lady Eagles rolled in the non-region clash.

Grove City (10-1) jumped to a 16-3 lead after on period and never looked back, ahead 29-6 at intermission.

The Lady Eagles were led by Becca Santom with 14 points, while Clara Hannon and Katie McDowell chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively.

Halle Murcko paced Reynolds (3-9) with 7 points.

• Farrell 48, Greensburg Central Catholic 26 – At Farrell, Coach Ed Turosky’s Lady Steelers (8-4) rolled past WPIAL foe Greensburg Central Catholic (7-3).

Kyra Crosby fired in 17 points to lead Farrell, Jalie Green bucketed 11 and Deryah Stewart and Mariah Hopson added 7 points each.

Emma Riley led the way for GCC with 14 points and Megan Zambruno chipped in 5 points.

• Kennedy Catholic 57, Erie 31 – At Hermitage, the Lady Golden Eagles eased to their 3rd win of the week and 9th consecutive overall.

The trio of Malia Magestro, Bella DiNardo and Mariah Vincent combined for all 57 points. Magestro made 6 treys en route to a game-high 24 markers, and Vincent added 4 triples and 14 points, as KC connected on 20 of 46 floor shots. DiNardo donated a 19-point, 9-rebound outing. Magestro also dished out 9 dimes to key Kennedy Catholic (9-2). Also, Alaina Suhar snared 6 rebounds.

KC Head Coach Justin Magestro said his club is focusing on its defense, and the Lady Golden Eagles coerced Erie into 24 turnovers and 10-for-49 shooting.

Makenna Wells went for 11 points for Erie (9-4), while Adrianna Mitchell mustered 7 markers and hauled down 9 caroms, while Madison Cruz contributed 8 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

• Maplewood 73, Sharpsville 46 – At Maplewood, the hosts jumped to a 22-11 lead after one period of the non-region contest and controlled the game the rest of the way.

The Lady Tigers (11-2 and 8-0 in Region 2) were led by Jordan Roser with 24 points and Isabella Eimer 21. 

Sharpsville (7-5) was paced by Cassie Dancak with 15 points. 

There were 54 fouls shot in the game. Sharpsville made 16 of 33 while Maplewood converted 13 of 21.

• Neshannock 55, West Middlesex 42 – At Westminster College, the Ms. Reds (9-4) and Lady Lancers (6-6) tipped kicked off Saturday’s event with a noon tipoff.

A tough 1st half was costly for WM. Neshannock led 12-7 after 8 minutes of play and 28-16 at halftime. The Lancers outscored the Reds 27-26 in the 2nd half.

Ellina DeLillo rifled in 19 points for Neshannock, Neleh Nogay scored 11 and Jesse Fehrs chipped in 7 points.

UMass recruit Makennah White fired in a game-high 27 points for WM and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Also, Carlie Beatty scored 7 points and Emily Anthony dished out 5 assists.

• Lakeview 54, Jamestown 16 – In the opener of a girls/boys doubleheader in the “Beauty and the Beast” event, Coach Gary Burke’s Sailors (10-2) rolled past the Lady Muskies (0-10).

Reese Gadsby fired in 19 points to lead Lakeview and Austa Reed registered 14 points.

Jocelyn Johnson was the leading point-getter for Jamestown with 8.

• Newton Falls 51, Brookfield 27 – At Newton Falls, the Lady Warriors fell to 1-5 in the All-American Conference Blue Tier Division and 4-7 overall with the loss to the Tigers.

Madison Haidet led Newton Falls with 14 points and Bree Hutson scored 13.

Sophie Hook led Brookfield with 14 points and 8 rebounds, Mikenzie Jumper chipped in 5 points and Katie Logan dished out 4 assists.

• Hickory 67, McDowell 61 – At Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, the Hornets harvested their 2nd win in less than 24 hours, while halting McDowell’s 10-game win skein.

Donald Whitehead went for 25 points, 11 during the final frame. Also, Peyton Mele manufactured a game-high 27-point performance, including 6 buckets from beyond the arc. Mele mustered 6 points during the 4th quarter when the Hornets hit 9 of 10 free-throw attempts. Whitehead was 4-for-4 and Mele 3-for-4.

Both teams connected on 22 field goals; however Hickory hit 13 of 17 freebies, compared with the 7-for-12 tally for the Trojans. 

Hickory (10-3) led 15-8 after a quarter and 32-19 by the break before McDowell rallied. The Trojans tallied 42 second-half points and cut their deficit to make it a 1-score game. McDowell made 10 treys, including Jonah Bock’s 7.

Bock bucketed 21 points and William Jeffress 20 for McDowell (10-2). Jeffress, a 6-foot-7 junior standout, has scored 1,345 career points.

• Neshannock 43, West Middlesex 32 – At Westminster College, the Neshannock boys followed up the Lady Lancers’ win over the Ms. Reds with a 43-32 victory over Coach Chad Mild’s Big Reds (4-8).

Russell Kwiat led the way for the WPIAL’s Lancers (10-3) with 14 points and Preston Turk bucketed 11.

Richie Preston had 10 points for West Middlesex and Hunter Smith added 8 points.

• Sharpsville 51, Wilmington 47 – At Westminster College, Coach Matt Durisko’s Blue Devils (7-5) rebounded from Friday’s tough OT loss to Hickory with a 4-point win over the Hounds (4-8).

Jackson Doyle and Noah Flaherty both scored 10 points to lead Sharpsville.

Caelan Bender, Braxton Shimrack and Austin Lisowski all had 9 points for Wilmington.

• Lakeview 51, Jamestown 33 – In the nightcap of the girls/boys doubleheader in Jamestown, Coach Garrett Blaschak’s Sailors improved to 8-5 with the non-region win over the Muskies (5-8).

Brett Beith bucketed 18 to pace Lakeview, Cole Thiec scored 13 and Hunter Miller contributed 9 points.

Darian Keyser led Jamestown with 15 points while Peyton McElhinny and Cam Keyser tallied 9 each.

• University High (W.Va.) 67, Kennedy Catholic 62 – At Montour’s Winter JamFest, University High (9-2) rallied to beat KC (7-3) in a battle of defending state champs.

Ike Herster rifled in a game-high 33 points for KC and surpassed 1,000 career points (1,003). Jaleel Christian scored 13 and Gio Magestro 10.

Div. I recruits K.J. McClurg (Niagara) led the Hawks with 21 points and Kaden Metheny (Bowling Green) scored 19. Mike Maumbe added 9 points for University High and John Ross Mazza chipped in 8.

KC won the PIAA Class 6A title last season while University High from Morgantown captured the West Virginia 3A title.

• Gen. McLane 64, Slippery Rock 51 – At Edinboro, the Rockets fell to 1-11 with the non-region loss to GM (9-3).

Daniel Bruce bucketed 17 points to lead GM, Nate Jones scored 13 and Eric Mathews and Eli Bruce added 9 points each.

Judah Roth fired in a game-high 21 points for Slippery Rock, Ethan Plesakov contributed 11 points and Zack Thompson chipped in 8.

Tourney

• West Middlesex had three place-winners and Grove City one at the two-day, 32-team event.

For the Big Reds of Coach Tony Gioan, 220-pounder Zeb Rubaker lost in the finals, 8-2, to Josh Sarasnick of Chartiers Valley. Teammates Justin O’Neil (120) and Anthony Gioan (195), both copped 5th as the Big Reds finished in 14th place with 69 points.

Grove City 160-pound ace Daiveon Say bowed in the finals, 7-4, to Brendan Finnerty of Thomas Jefferson. Coach Wes Phipps’ Eagles finished in 16th place with 58 points.

Thomas Jefferson won the tournament with 211.5 points, followed by Chartiers Valley with 190.

South Side Duals

Coach Dave Ciafre’s Sharon High Tigers went 3-2 on Saturday at South Side Beaver High School.

Sharon beat Blackhawk (78-6), New Castle (48-24) and Lakeview (56-12) and fell to a pair of Ohio squads – St. Clairsville (46-30) and Independence (39-34).

Sully Allen went 5-0 with 4 pins and a technical fall and Nick Dignall was 5-0 with 3 pins.

Sam Stevenson, Christian Hacker, Mike Zellefrow and Seth Hoovler went 4-1, Mohamed Kanan, Eli Buck, Shamar Anderson and Aidan Buck posted 3-2 records, Camden Reiser and Andrew Price went 2-3 and Seth Evans was 1-1.

• Lakeview went 2-3 at the South Side Duals.

Coach Tom Tingley’s Sailors beat South Side Beaver (36-15) and Jamestown (42-30) and fell to Sharon and 2 Ohio teams – Berkshire (48-36) and Toronto (37-18).

• Mercer 73, Union City 6 – At Union City Friday, the Mustangs of Coach Jerry Gawne routed the Bears.

Scoring falls for Mercer were: Zach Chase (120), Carson Filer (126), Donnie Palmer (138), Hunter Houy (152), Aiden Bright (160), Mason Hesselgesser (170). 

Marshall VanTassel (190) notched a pin for the Bears.
