The Hickory High girls golf team poses on Thursday after the Tam O'Shanter Invitational.

Villa Maria won the team title at Thursday’s Tam O’Shanter Invitational with a 250. Hickory placed 2nd with 256.

Leah Benson led the Hornets with an 82 (4th place overall). McKenzie Gustas shot an 84 (5th place) while Kyra Woods carded 90 (10th).


• Hickory 209, West Middlesex 238 – At Deer Creek Golf Course in Hubbard, Tyson Djakovich shot a 47 to lead the Hornets past the Reds.

Hickory: Djakovich 47, Carter Gill 52, Zac Lanshcak 55, Ryan Brown 55.

WM: Cal Nych 54, Caden Lewis 56, Ryan Haines 61, Brandon Miller 67.


• Mercer 8, Maplewood 0 – At Guys Mills, Peyton Miller fired in 3 goals to lead the Lady M’s past the Tigers.

Katie Ellis scored twice for Mercer while Julia Balaski, Devyn Bailey and Emma Juergens had the other goals. Bailey also had 2 assists and Arielle Reiser, Darby Miller and Aubrey Simcik had 1 helper each. Bailey Grossman posted the shutout in goal.

• Hickory 13, Oil City 0 – In the home-opener at Hornet Stadium, Carla Murtha scored 4 goals and had 1 assist to lead the Hornets past Oil City.

Santina Masters, Kayla Saylor and Izzy Hochstetler had 2 goals each while Anna Rodenbaugh, Kelsey Gargano and Ella Vance also had goals.

Masters also contributed 3 assists while an assist was credited to Saylor, Hochstetler, Molly Piso and Emily Grande.

Molly Piso recorded the shutout. This gives her 45 career shutouts – tying a school record held by 2013 graduate Morgan McBride. Also, based on stats recorded by the Pa. Soccer Coaches Association, Piso shares the District 10 career shutout record with McBride.

• Wilmington 2, Eisenhower 0 – At Eisenhower High in Russell, Reese Walker fired in both goals for the Hounds (3-0) off assists from Lindsey Martineau.

Leah Gerstnecker registered 9 saves to earn her 2nd straight shutout.


• Sharon 7, West Middlesex 0 – At Tiger Stadium, Ty Chartraw fired in 3 goals to lead Sharon (2-0) past WM.

Nikoli Dobosh, Nick Leftheris, Colsen Weigle and Spencer Baker had the other goals for the Tigers. Jake Auchter had 2 assists for Sharon while Justin Stanek, Chartraw and Dobosh each had 1.

Nik Hunchuk made 8 saves in goal for Sharon. Anthony Gioan made 22 for the Big Reds.


• Hickory 3, Lakeview 0 – At “The Hive” in Hermitage, the Hornets rolled in 3 sets, 25-14, 25-7, 25-13.

• Hickory 3, Farrell 0 – At Farrell Wednesday, the Hornets posted a 25-17, 25-10, 25-11 sweep.

• Commodore Perry 3, Rocky Grove 1 – At Sheakleyville, the Lady Panthers posted a 25-10, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23 win.

• Grove City 3, Greenville 1 – At Greenville, the Lady Eagles picked up a 25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19 win.

• McDowell 3, Hickory 2 – At Erie, the Lady Trojans handed the Hornets (2-1, 6-1) their first loss of the season in a Region 3 match.

“What a great tennis match both teams played,” said Hickory co-coach Ed Newmeyer. “We had three matches go to three sets and another in a second set tiebreaker. We lost our first match of the season to a strong McDowell team, but the competitive match experience our players gained will be invaluable as our season progresses.”

• Oil City 4, Kennedy Catholic 1 – At Oil City, the Lady Oilers rolled past KC. Lydia Grove won her 4th straight match for Kennedy.
