Hickory golf region champs

KINSMAN, Ohio – McKenzie Gustas garnered a medalist round of 73 and teammate Sasha Petrochko posted a 78, leading Hickory High girls’ golf team to a Region 1 Mega-match win.

Thursday at par-72 Bronzwood Golf Course, the Hornets harvested the program’s 11th consecutive crown under Coach Craig Antush.

Gustas, Petrochko and Luciana Masters’ 80 paced Hickory to a 231 team total. The Hornets outdistanced Reynolds (305), Conneaut Area (309), Grove City (328), and West Middlesex (361).

Hickory (25) dominated the season standings, followed by Reynolds (17), CASH (16), Grove City (12) and West Middlesex (6).

Hickory: McKenzie Gustas 73, Sasha Petrochko 89, Luciana Masters 80.

Reynolds: Anna Harpst 88, McKenzie Herman 108, Alison Litwiler 109.

Grove City: Emily Donahue 94, Haley Weber 108, Emily Sindlinger 126.

West Middlesex: Quinnlynn Reaver 110, Kaylee McCarty 125, Phoebe Wilson 126.

Sharpsville’s Stacia Fennell fired an 83, Hickory’s Ava Liburdi a 91, and Conneaut Area’s Julianna Jacobs carded a 94.

• Wilmington 189, Reynolds 220 – At Shenango Lake Golf Club in Transfer, Kaitlyn Hoover and Garrett Heller both shot 44s to lead the Hounds past the Raiders.

Wilmington: Hoover, Heller 44s, Presley Deep 45, Sam Mistretta 56.

• Grove City 4, Sharon 1 – At Buhl Park, Macy Matson and Katie Feng won at 1st and 2nd singles and the Lady Eagles swept the doubles competition to defeat the Tigers.

Miranda Metro picked up a win at No. 3 singles for Sharon.

“The 2nd doubles match might be the longest high school doubles match I’ve ever seen, and both of those doubles teams are to be commended for their focus and intensity throughout that match,” said Grove City Coach Michael Coulter.

• Wilmington 4, Kennedy Catholic 1 – At New Wilmington, the Hounds picked up a win over KC.

Mary Matyasovsky and Jenna Allison captured wins in singles for Wilmington while Kennedy Catholic’s Jade Nguyen won at third singles.

Singles: Matyasovsky (W) def. Alaina Suhar, 6-2, 6-1; Allison (W) def. Clarissa Ealy, 6-0, 6-0; Nguyen (KC) def. Bella Toto, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(7-2). Doubles: Mary Boyd-Adrienne Offutt (W) won by forfeit; Ami Hatch-Eleanor Furimsky (W) won by forfeit.


• Gen. McLane 5, Wilmington 0 – At Linden Field in Edinboro, the Region 4 Lancers fired in four 2nd-half goals to hand the Region 1 Hounds (5-1) their first loss of the season.

Brooklyn Respecki led GM with a hat trick while Teaghan Watkins and Abby Walker scored the other goals.

Bella Dibble made 1 save in goal for the shutout victory. Taylor Kendall collected 11 saves for Wilmington.

• Mercer 5, Hickory 1 – At Lamor Road Field, the Region 1 Lady M’s defeated the Region 2 Hornets.

Mercer did not report stats to The Herald.

Santina Masters scored the lone goal for Hickory off a corner kick from Abby Cozad.


• Grove City 8, Conneaut Area – At Forker Field, Josh Dreves, John Hake, and Jimmy Irani scored 2 goals each as the Eagles routed CASH in the Region 2 clash.

Dreves also compiled 2 assists. Landon Haggart and Pierson Badowski had the other goals. Badowski, Jacob Irani, and Colden Barr had 1 assist each and Jacob Stucchio posted the shutout in goal.

• Slippery Rock 5, Hickory 1 – At Troy-Alan Stadium in Slippery Rock, Nick Kingerski fired in 4 goals to lead the Rockets to the Region 2 victory.

David Magliocca had a goal and an assist for Slippery Rock, Hunter Berry was credited with a pair of assists, and Cullen Birkes added 1 helper.

Michael Orendi scored for Hickory.

• Slippery Rock 4, Greenville 2 – At Stewart Field/Snyder-Stone Stadium in Greenville recently, the Rockets rolled during the 2nd half.

Cullen Birkes’ unassisted goal at the 4:07 mark of the 1st half provided Slippery Rock with a 1-0 margin at intermission.

The 2nd-half shootout included goals from Slippery Rock’s Ethan Folmer, Nick Kingerski (Hunter Berry assist), and Berry’s unassisted goal.

Garnering both Greenville goals was Reese Stefanowicz at the 25:52 and 29:30 junctures.

Rockets’ goalkeeper Connor Wallace was credited with a handful of saves, while Greenville goalkeeper Bryce Stefanowicz made 8 saves.


• Sharpsville 3, Maplewood 0 – At Guys Mills, the Lady Blue Devils (3-0, 4-1) grabbed a 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 Region 3 sweep vs. the Tigers.
