GIRLS TENNIS

The District 10 team championships are today on the outdoor courts at Villa Maria Academy in Erie.

The event was slated to be held Thursday, but was moved to today due to Thursday’s rainy weather forecast.

Coach Ed Newmeyer’s Region 1 champion Hickory girls team will compete for the Class 2A team championship at 3 p.m. against Villa Maria.

Fairview and McDowell play at 1 p.m. for the Class 3A crown.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

• Hickory 3, Grove City 2 – At “The Hive” in Hermitage, Coach Chris Caputo’s Hornets improved to 9-0 with a thrilling 5-set Region 2 win over the Eagles on Tuesday night, 15-25, 25-13, 26-24, 22-25, 16-14.

Paige Griffith led the way for Hickory with 20 kills. Abby Berry led Grove City with 21 points (8 aces), 39 assists, 5 blocks, and 16 digs.

• Wilmington 3, Mercer 0 – At New Wilmington, the Lady Hounds (9-0) remained unbeaten with a 25-11, 25-15, 27-25 Region 1 sweep over Mercer.

• Sharpsville 3, Sharon 0 – At Sharpsville, the Blue Devils improved to 7-1 in Region 2 and 8-2 overall with a 25-15, 25-9, 25-5 sweep over Sharon.

• West Middlesex 3, Jamestown 0 – At Jamestown, Kennedy Beatty had 11 kills and 5 blocks to lead the Ms. Reds to a 25-11, 26-24, 25-19 Region 1 victory over the Lady Muskies (4-5).

• Kennedy Catholic 3, Farrell 2 – At Hermitage, KC won the opening 2 sets and hung on for a 5-set Region 1 win over the Lady Steelers, 25-11, 25-18, 16-25, 16-25, 15-7.

• Reynolds 3, Commodore Perry 1 – At Sheakleyville, Mya Winkle had 14 points and 9 digs as the Lady Raiders picked up the Region 1 win over the Panthers, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20.

• Greenville 3, Slippery Rock 2 – At “The Rock Box” in Slippery Rock, the Trojans trailed 2-1, but rallied to win the final 2 sets in an exciting Region 2 clash, 16-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 17-15.

Greenville: Kylee Loreno 6 kills, 26 digs; Jaidah Rosario 20 kills, 23 digs; Amber Pearce 20 assists; Reese Schaller 29 digs; Amber Pearce 15 digs; Carina Loreno 7 assists, 19 digs. Slippery Rock: No stats reported.

BOYS SOCCER

• Mercer 2, Wilmington 0 – Under the lights at Lamor Road Field, the Mustangs clinched the Region 1 title with the win on Tuesday night.

Mercer beat the Hounds, 1-0, earlier this season to sweep the regular season series.

On Tuesday, Garrett Thumm buried a goal with 26 minutes left in the 1st half to give Mercer a 1-0 lead.

Mercer took the 2-0 lead with 15:49 left in the 2nd half following a scrum in front of Wilmington goalkeeper Skyler Sloan.

The Mercer boys team has won 3 District 10 titles (2000, 2012, 2017). The Mercer girls captured their first D-10 title last season.

The Mercer boys and Iroquois always seem to clash for the D-10 crown. Last season was the 4th straight year the two teams battled for the title.

• Kennedy Catholic 5, Commodore Perry 0 – At Hermitage, Jayson Young had 2 goals and Cody May (8 saves) registered the shutout in goal as the Golden Eagles beat the Panthers in the Region 1 clash.

Aidan Churlik, Dakota Tatta and Alex Carr fired in the other goals for Kennedy Catholic (3-5-1).

Commodore Perry fell to 0-9 with the loss.

• Sharpsville 4, West Middlesex 0 – At West Middlesex, Drake Carte and Liam Campbell both scored 2 goals each in the Region 1 win over WM.

Mack Staunch earned the shutout in goal for the Blue Devils.

CROSS COUNTRY

GIRLS

• West Middlesex vs. Jamestown – At Pymatuning State Park near Jamestown, neither school fielded a full squad. Jamestown’s Brianna Stafford (27:07) out-kicked West Middlesex’s Lily Widmyer (27:13) and Jenna Kalp (28:32) in the exhibition.

• Hickory 27, Grove City 29 – At Grove City, the Lady Hornets edged the host Eagles.

Abby Steffler (20:37) and Karissa Dunkerly (21:08) swept the top 2 spots for the Lady Eagles while Ashleigh Stephenson (21:34), Alison Stephens (22:12) and Christie Boren (22:28) took 3rd, 4th and 5th for the Hornets.

• Wilmington 28, Sharon 31 – At New Wilmington, two of the area’s best cross country competitors squared off.

Sharon ace Gianna Labbiento finished 1st in a time of 13:11 while Wilmington standout Grace Mason was runner-up with in 13:26.

• Slippery Rock 27, Sharpsville 28 – At Buhl Farm, the Rockets squeezed past Sharpsville. 

Sharpsville was led by Lily Smith and Brenna Sposito, who went 1-2. Slippery Rock’s Samantha Frazier finished 3rd.

BOYS

• West Middlesex 18, Jamestown 45 – At Pymatuning State Park near Jamestown, the visiting Big Reds rolled, led by the 1-2 placement of Giovani Rococi (19:02) and Derek Johnson (19:19). Jamestown’s Riley Runyon ran 3rd (19:20).

• Grove City 25, Hickory 34 – At Grove City, the Eagles captured 7 of the top 10 spots in beating the Hornets.

Hickory’s Cole Frazier finished 1st in a time of 16:17 while Gabe Nichols (16:47) and Josh Jones (17:03) finished 2nd and 3rd for Grove City.

In the junior high race, Hickory’s boys edged Grove City, 26-29, at Memorial Park.

Veteran Grove City Coach Mike Sample said it was the Eagles’ junior high program’s first loss in 18 years.

Both teams are 9-1, according to Hickory co-Head Coach Patti Rodenbaugh, who said, “We’re absolutely thrilled with boys’ efforts (Tues)day.”

• Wilmington 15, Sharon 50 – At New Wilmington, Sharon did not field a full team.

Tagg Walker (13:02), Akito Hatch (13:46) and Beau Reed (13:58) swept the top 3 spots for the Hounds. Sharon’s Kyle Wareham (16:08) finished 9th.

• Slippery Rock 15, Sharpsville 50 – At Buhl Park, Sharpsville did not field a full squad. The exhibition was won by Slippery Rock’s Kenneth Bickel, while Kellen DeJulia was Sharpsville’s top place-winner.
