Malia Magestro

Kennedy Catholic's Malia Magestro drives to the basket against Farrell during Monday's Region 1 game in Hermitage.

HERMITAGE – Malia Magestro singlehandedly has outscored her Kennedy Catholic High basketball teammates thus far this season. She takes more shots than all of her teammates, combined; but Magestro also makes almost as many as she misses, and she also gets her mates involved. Witness Monday night’s Region 1 rivalry game against Farrell.

Magestro manufactured a 31-point, 6-assist, 5-rebound line, keying Kennedy Catholic to a 63-33 win.

Against Farrell, Magestro made 11 of 24 field-goal attempts, or approximately 46 percent – not bad, considering she has added a step-back jumper to her repertoire. In addition to slashing for scores and bucketing break-outs off turnovers, Magestro made a pair from beyond the arc.

But Magestro’s mates made their contributions, as well. Bellah DiNardo notched an 18-point, 7-rebound, 3-assist outing – trading several back-door give-and-goes with Magestro – Leah Lombardi lent a trio of treys for 9 points, and Addie Flanders finished with a team-high 9 rebounds, despite exiting early in the 2nd half after rolling her ankle.

Kennedy Catholic Head Coach Justin Magestro, Malia’s father, said, while his daughter has faced daunting double-teams and defenses designed to stop her, “She doesn’t feel (pressure); she feels she’s gonna do what she needs to do. And if we can keep gettin’ point-production out of Bellah and Leah ... if (Lombardi) can keep knockin’ down threes and Bellah can keep gettin’ to the basket, it’s gonna make it hard for teams to (concentrate on stopping Malia).

“If those kids don’t step up (opposing teams, such as Farrell) will run two and three (defenders) at her,” mentor Magestro continued. “My hat goes off to Malia’s teammates ‘cause they’ve been a great support system for her and they’re always encouraging her. And they’re steppin’ up in a big way for her.

“We’ve got a great team here,” Coach Magestro continued. “Not only do we have a great group of kids, but we’ve got great parents in the program that all buy in. And the kids understand that every kid has a role – R-O-L-E – on this team, and we really try to stick to that philosophy. And when we do that, we’re okay.

“We just hope we’re better by the middle-to-the-end of February when the playoffs come around,” Coach Magestro added.

In winning for the 4th time in 5 outings, Kennedy Catholic improved to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the region.

For Farrell (3-3, 3-10), Kyra Crosby connected for 9 points – tossing in 2 triples – and 8 rebounds, Deryah Stewart scored 6, and Sanaa Brodie bounded 7 times, several of the loose-ball/hustle variety.

Magestro has mustered 383 markers this season, compared with 334 for her teammates. But after dropping 2 of its first 3 games KC has claimed 7 of its last 10. And to mentor Magestro’s point, DiNardo, a freshman, has donated 8 double-digit outings, and Lombardi has lent 16 buckets from beyond the arc, 11 in the last handful of games.

“She’s gettin’ a lot of confidence in her teammates,” Coach Magestro said regarding his daughter. “You know her teammates, at the beginning of the year, I think they got caught up in just watching her a lot; now they’re starting to move without the basketball, and they’re finding a lot of success.”
