SHARON – Two games into the 2019-20 season, and teams are still defining roles as they find an identity.

This much is certain for Sharpsville High’s girls basketball team: Senior Claire Staunch stabilizes an otherwise exclusively underclassmen-laden squad – the best of whom is Cassie Dancak.

Dancak drilled a team-high 15 points, while Staunch secured the win by converting 8 of 10 fourth-quarter free throws in the Blue Devils’ 53-45 win over host Sharon.

For a 13-point, 8-rebound, 4-assist line, Staunch was selected MVP Saturday night during the 16th annual Rick Fragle Classic. Dancak, a freshman, was chosen to the All-Tournament Team.

Sharpsville skipper Katie Grandy praised, “For a freshman, she came out and played well. She hit big shots for us in both games. It’s a tall order as a freshman ... to not only go out there, but go out there and put points on the board. She’s done that in previous years in younger grades, and I saw it in her and I knew she could do that, and I’m glad she came out here as a varsity starter and was able to do it.

“Claire’s our ‘rock,’” Grandy continued. “We’re young – she’s our only upperclassman, at all – so we lean on her at times like that. Give the ball to Claire, let her get fouled and go to the line and hit free throws. She does that for us, she’s done it consistently, and we’re gonna have to have her play that role for us.”

There were 2 ties and 4 lead changes; otherwise, it was a wire-to-wire win for Sharpsville, including 11-8 at the quarter, 21-20 by the break, and 31-29 through 3 quarters.

Sharon (1-1) shaved its deficit to 50-45 with 62 ticks to play on Jaysina’s Sellers’ 2nd straight right-wing 3-point field goal, but drew no closer owing to Staunch’s sharpshooting.

Sellers scored a game-high 17 points, tossing in a trio of treys, en route to All-Tourney Team honors, while Thoniece Ripley recorded a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double in earning All-Tourney laurels.

“Our team played hard, but we had trouble in the second half running our plays, getting our sets through, and Sharpsville didn’t miss many foul shots,” Lady Tigers’ taskmaster Kevin Washington assessed. “I didn’t like that we didn’t finish plays ... we got upset for few minutes there and started going one-on-one, and we can’t have that breakdown. We’ve gotta be disciplined as far running plays.

“Jaysina played well in the two games for us, (and) Ripley had a very nice game for us coming off the bench,” Washington praised. “Elasha Williams was very tough on defense. But still, we just missed too many shots out there.”

Also for Sharpsville (2-0), role players Chasie Fry (7 points, 7 rebounds) and point guard Alli Davis (11 points) contributed. Davis drew praise from Grandy, also.

“Especially with the youth, it’s nice to start strong,” Grandy observed. “We’re talented, but we’re young, and I’m glad to start off like this because it gives us some confidence moving forward.”

• Hickory 54, Union Twp. 42 – In the consy contest, Reanna Daniels drilled 22 points and Aniyah Anderson added 14 for Coach Matt Fabian’s Hornets (1-1). Daniels was named to the All-Tourney Team, as was Union’s Maddie Wynn. Nina Caslandra collected 11 points and Amorae Waters went for 10 for Union (0-2).

Hickory led 14-5 at the quarter, 25-15 by the break, and 39-22 through 3 periods, before the Lady Scotties scored 20 fourth-period points to cut their deficit to single digits. However, Hickory hit 17 of 28 free-throw attempts, compared with Union’s 4-for-16 shooting.
