The 29th annual Big Red Cross Country Invitational – one of Mercer County and western Pennsylvania’ s oldest and largest events – is set for Saturday on the West Middlesex High campus. 

The Middle School girls’ and boys’ races will begin at 9 a.m., followed by varsity girls’ and boys’ and JV girls’ and boys. Each race will begin approximately 5  minutes following the conclusion of the preceding race, Assistant Meet Director Geraldine Truog noted.

Approximately 1,000 runners representing 38 will be competing. Wolf Creek Race Management will provide timing and official results.

The field includes: Beaver County Christian, Cambridge Springs, Clarion, Cochranton, Commodore Perry, Conneaut Area, Cranberry, DuBois Central Catholic, Ellwood City, Franklin, Girard, Grove City, Hickory,  Jamestown, Jefferson (Ohio), Karns City, Keystone, Lakeview, Laurel, Maplewood, Neshannock, New Castle, North Clarion, North East, Oil City, Portersville Christian, Reynolds, Riverside, Rocky Grove, Seneca, Sharon, Sharpsville, Shenango, Slippery Rock, Union City, West Middlesex and Wilmington.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

• Reynold 23, West Middlesex 34 – At West Middlesex, Reynolds’ Hannah Wagner won in a time of 22:03.7, narrowly outdistancing West Middlesex’s Lia Bartholomew (22:17.5).

• Sharon 22, Conneaut Area 33; Sharon 18, Conneaut  (Ohio) 37 – At Linesville, Sharon standout Gianna Labbiento (22:06) earned 1st place vs. Conneaut (Ohio) and finished behind Meara Shannon of CASH. Sharon’s Abby Douglas finished 3rd.

• Grove City 24, Sharpsville 33 – At Buhl Park, Sharpsville’s Lauren Mehler clocked in at 23:30 to finish 1st. Abigail Steffler, Karissa Dunkerley and Eleanor Chuzi were 2nd through 4th for Grove City.

“This is my first year back at Sharpsville,” said Coach Barry McLaughlin. “The girls race was close, it came down to a matter of feet between many different runners. A place here or a place there would’ve made the difference. That’s how close it was. It was a fun race to watch. We just came up short. Hats off to those Grove City girls. They ran really hard. So did our girls, but in the end they had a little more than we did.”

• Lakeview 15, Commodore Perry 50 – At Stoneboro it was a Lady Sailor’s shutout, led by Claire Oliver, Abby Mellon, Aubrey Hogue, Lauren Turik and Mikayla Montgomery.

• Wilmington 22, Hickory 33 – On Delahunty Middle School’s campus in Hermitage, Wilmington’s Grace Mason mustered a winning 20:40.58 clocking. Logan Davis ended as runner-up for Hickory.

• Jamestown 15, Kennedy Catholic 50 – At Hermitage, Riley Runyan finished 1st in 21:43 for the Lady Muskies. Ellie Wanner (22:40) led the way for KC, which did not field a full team.

BOYS

• West Middlesex 25, Reynolds 32 – At West Middlesex, Reynolds’ Troy Hart had a winning time of 18.:43.1. Big Reds’ runner-up Giovanni Rococi (19:06.7) paced winning West Middlesex.

• Conneaut Area 15, Sharon 50; Conneaut (Ohio) 15, Sharon 50 – At Linesville, the Tigers didn’t field a full team against the Eagles and Spartans.

• Grove City 15, Sharpsville 50 – At Buhl Park, Toby Jones (18:13) Joe Somora and Gabe Nichols finished 1st through 3rd as the Eagles beat the Devils. Tyler Miodrag (21:12) placed 9th for Sharpsville.

• Lakeview 21, Commodore Perry 36 – At Stoneboro, despite 81-degree temperatures, the trio of Ethan Barrick, Colson Jenkins and Luke Hosteler placed 1-2-3 to lead Lakeview. Noah Krantz finished 4th for the visiting Panthers.

• Hickory 22, Wilmington 33 – On Delahunty Middle School’s campus in Hermitage, the host Hornets were led to the season-opening win by the 1-2-3 finish of Cole Frazier (18:14), Matthew Jordan (18:25) and Tommy Hunyadi (18:42). Dale Nestor finished 4th for Wilmington.

GIRLS TENNIS

• Sharon 4, Kennedy Catholic 1 – At Buhl Park, Faith McSherry and Emily Lipke earned singles wins to lead the Lady Tigers to the win.

Lydia Grove won at 2nd singles for Kennedy Catholic.

• Wilmington 4, Franklin 1 – At New Wilmington, the Lady Hounds improved to 5-0 in Region 1 and 5-1 overall with the win.

Ashlynn McAllen and Grace Hendrickson grabbed wins for Wilmington and the Hounds swept doubles play.

• Grove City 4, Oil City 1 – At Grove City, Coach Michael Coulter’s Eagles moved to 3-1 in Region 1 and 3-2 overall.

Mary Coulter and Naomi Conger won singles matches and Grove City swept doubles play.

“We had some good performances in varsity, and it was especially good to see the Feng-Hickly doubles team come back after losing the first set and win the next two sets,” said GC Coach Coulter. “It was also a great day for a lot of tennis as there were 45 young women who played either varsity or exhibition matches (19 from GC, 26 from OC).”

BOYS GOLF

Region 1 Mega-Match

Brett Beith fired a 79 on Tuesday to lead Lakeview to victory in the Region 1 Mega-Match at Pleasant Acres Golf Course in Jamestown.

The Sailors shot a team score of 350. They were followed by Kennedy Catholic (379), Mercer (383), Reynolds (402) and Greenville (428). Jamestown only had 2 golfers finish the match.

Charlie Gonzalez led KC with an 83, Cameron Weatherholt shot a 92 for Mercer, Jonathan Crumbacher paced Reynolds with a 90, Ty Csonka carded a 103 for Greenville and Aidan Swezey had a 106 for Jamestown.

Region 2 Mega-Match

Grove City continued its hot streak by capturing Tuesday’s mega-match at Grove City Country Club. It was the 5th mega-match of the season – all won by the Eagles.

GC’s team score of 328 outdistanced Hickory (353), Slippery Rock (365), Sharpsville (386), West Middlesex (398), Sharon (399) and Wilmington (471).

Slippery Rock’s Jacob Wolak shot a 78 to earn medalist honors. Jack Donahue led Grove City with a 79.

Cameron Colbert led Hickory with an 81, Mack Staunch paced Sharpsville with an 89, Braden Hanahan was West Middlesex’s top linkster with an 86, Nolan Songer led Sharon by carding a 91 and Maxwell Frederick and Brayden McCown both shot 109 for Wilmington.

Gianna Effinite earned medalist honors by firing a 43. Bella Vennarre led CASH with a 53.

GIRLS SOCCER

• Hickory 4, Erie 0 – At Erie, Kayla Saylor, Santina Masters, Kelsey Gargano, and Emily Grande garnered goals for the visiting Hornets.

Masters and Saylor both had 2 assists, and Molly Piso pitched the shutout with 4 saves, Coach B.J. Rudge reported.

JV: Hickory, 1-0 (Ella Vance goal; Daisy Rust in goal for the shutout).

• Wilmington 2, Greenville 0 – At Greyhounds Stadium, Reese Walker scored both goals for Wilmington (2-0) and Ava Krepp assisted on both. 

Leah Gerstnecker earned the shutout in goal with 4 saves.

Greenville keeper Victoria Mull made 7 saves in the loss.

• Conneaut Area 12, Sharpsville 1 – At South Py Twp., Claire Eaton fired in 5 goals to lead CASH past the Devils.

Amelia Roch scored for Sharpsville. Devils’ goalkeeper was Neva Turner.
