NEW WILMINGTON – WKBN’s “Game of the Week” returns to Westminster College where the Titans face the undefeated Grove City College. The game, at Harold Burry Stadium, will be televised live beginning at 1 p.m. on MyYTV
The Wolverines sit atop the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, while Westminster is coming off an impressive win (34-12) at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland.
In Westminster’s win former Farrell High All-State standout Brice Butler made 8 tackles (6 solos, including a tackle for a loss). Butler pilfered 3 passes, including a 100-yard Pick-six extending the Titans’ lead to 27-12 with just under 8 minutes left in the game. Butler’s 3 interceptions tied a program record, while becoming the first Titan to achieve the feat since Don Augustine in 2000
This is the 103rd meeting, all-time, between the programs. Westminster leads the series, 55-39-8, with the first clash taking place in 1892.
Grove City (3-0), coached by Andrew DiDonato, is averaging 33.3 points-per game while surrendering 11.8. Westminster (1-1), coached by Scott Benzel, is scoring 20.5 ppg., but permitting 30 ppg.; however, that includes a 48-7 season-opening loss to perennial power University of Mount Union.
Wolverines’ senior place kicker Nick Morrow captured PAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Morrow kicked a pair of 2nd-half field goals in Grove City’s 13-6 win over Carnegie Mellon at Robert E. Thorn Field. His 37-yard field goal with 10:09 remaining in the 3rd quarter gave the Wolverines a 10-0 lead. Morrow’s 20-yard field goal extended Grove City’s lead to 13-3 with 14:05 to play. Morrow has made all 3 field goal attempts this season.
Notes: In the teams’ last 3 meetings, Westminster won (24-17) on April 9; however, Grove City garnered wins on Oct. 12, 2019 (43-41) and Oct. 6, 2018 (36-33). Last April, Westminster and Grove City, both unbeaten in score, were tied at 17 in the 4th quarter. The Titans traveled 95 yards for the game-winning scoreline on a 7-yard pass from Cole Konieczka to Vincent Giles to secure a 24-17 victory for Westminster. Konieczka threw for 159 yards while Ryan Gomes led the team with 94 rushing yards plus a TD. Grove City quarterback Josh Ehst threw for over 200 yards (217) and finished with 2 TDs (both to Cody Gustafson). ... Two years ago Grove City scored late on a Josh Ehst touchdown with no time left for a 43-41 win over Westminster. The Wolverines led at the start of the 2nd half (30-14). The Titans returned to the lead with just under 4 minutes left (41-37) before Ehst’s TD, which was set up by a Titans’ interception in the end zone, which caused was escaped and recovered by Grove City on the 1-yard line.
