GREENVILLE – Director of Athletics Amy Schafer recently announced the hiring of Zack Walters as Thiel College’s men’s soccer head coach. Walters was named the interim head coach of the program on Oct. 8, 2020. He served as the assistant coach for the team during the 2019 season.

“I am excited and looking forward to helping grow the culture that we have built at Thiel,” Walters said. “I hope to lead a program where our student-athletes strive for excellence on and off the field. Our goal is for them to leave their mark during their four years. If they can look back with pride on their growth and accomplishments, then I will consider that a success.”

A 2018 graduate of Presidents’ Athletic Conference member Westminster College, Walters earned 4 letters and was a 2-year co-captain for the Titans. Walters scored 12 goals and handed out 10 assists for a total of 34 points during his collegiate career. He was a 2-time All-PAC selection, including 2nd-Team accolades in 2017.

In 2015, he was a member of the Titans team that won the PAC title and advanced the NCAA Division III Tournament. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at Westminster in 2018, and helped lead the Titans to another PAC championship and appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. He was also recently named to the Westminster All-Decade (2010-19) Second Team.

A native of Hermitage and graduate of Hickory High, Walters graduated magna cum laude from Westminster College in 2018 with bachelor’s degrees in business administration and sports management. As an undergraduate, Walters qualified for the PAC Academic Honor Roll 4r times. He went on to earn a master’s degree in general education from Westminster College in 2020.

Walters has served as head boys’ coach for Select FC Club Team since 2017. He is also the head coach of U-19 and U-16 boys teams.

GROVE CITY

• Men’s Basketball – A nine-game Presidents’ Athletic Conference schedule awaits the Grove City College men’s basketball team as the Wolverines will resume play February 3. Grove City will play each of the other nine conference members in a single round-robin schedule during the month. The schedule will feature a pair of three-game weeks.

The Wolverines open the season Feb. 3 at Waynesburg. It will be the 106th meeting between the programs, who first met during the 1912-13 season.

Five nights later, Grove City commences its home schedule by hosting Washington & Jefferson in the Grove City College Arena. That starts a three-game week for the Wolverines.

Grove City will then host Bethany in the second game of the week Feb. 10.

The week concludes Saturday, Feb. 13 when the Wolverines visit Geneva. The Grove City-Geneva game will be a rematch of last year’s conference tournament title game, won by the Wolverines, 86-70. Geneva is Grove City’s most-frequently played opponent as the programs have met 177 times since 1898. The Wolverines have 101 wins against Geneva.

Another three-game week starts Monday, Feb. 15, when the Wolverines visit Saint Vincent. Grove City edged Saint Vincent in the conference tournament semifinals, 70-69, last season. The home team has won each of the last four meetings in the series.

Two nights later, the Wolverines return home to face Chatham. The week concludes Saturday, February 20 with a trip to archrival Westminster. It will be the 149th all-time meeting in a series that dates to 1901.

Grove City concludes the scheduled regular season with home games against Mercer County rival Thiel and conference newcomer Franciscan. Grove City will host Thiel Feb. 24. The Wolverines ousted Thiel in last year’s conference tournament quarterfinals, 76-62.

The Saturday, Feb. 27 tilt with Franciscan will be the first meeting between the programs as league members. Grove City has won 8 of the 11 all-time meetings with the Barons, including a 73-60 win Feb. 27, 2019 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championship Tournament.

The conference tournament will be held March 1 through March 6. All 10 teams will qualify for the tournament.

• Women’s Basketball – The GCC women’s basketball team will play each of the other nine PAC programs in a single round robin schedule during February.

The nine-game schedule begins Wednesday, Feb. 3, when the Wolverines host Waynesburg in the Grove City College Arena.

Five nights later, Grove City opens its road schedule by visiting Washington & Jefferson. Grove City defeated W&J, 54-52, in the 2020 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament title game. The Wolverines also won both regular season games with W&J last year, marking the first time since 1990-91 that Grove City won both conference games with the Presidents.

Grove City will then visit Bethany for a 6 p.m. battle Wednesday, Feb. 10. The Wolverines return home Feb. 13 for a 1 p.m. tip-off with Geneva. That will be the first of back-to-back home games.

Two nights later, Grove City hosts Saint Vincent. The Wolverines handed Saint Vincent its only conference loss in the regular season last season.

The Wolverines’ second consecutive three-game week will continue Feb. 17 when Grove City heads to Chatham.

Grove City concludes its home schedule Saturday, Feb. 20 by hosting archrival Westminster. It will be the 88th all-time meeting between the programs. Last year, the visiting team won each of the two regular season games. However, Grove City thundered past Westminster, 70-58, in the conference tournament semifinals.

 Westminster is Grove City’s second-most frequently played all-time opponent. Thiel owns the distinction of being Grove City’s most frequent all-time foe and the Wolverines will head to Greenville for the programs’ 89th all-time encounter Feb. 24.

Grove City closes the scheduled regular season Feb. 27 by visiting conference newcomer Franciscan. The Wolverines have played the Steubenville, Ohio-based Barons six times all time. Grove City leads the all-time series 5-1.

All 10 conference teams will qualify for the conference tournament, which will run from March 1 to March 6.

Grove City’s weeknight home games are set to start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday games will tip off at 1 p.m.

SWIMMING 

• The Grove City College women’s swimming & diving team will compete against the 6 other Presidents’ Athletic Conference squads in dual-meet competition starting Jan. 29. The Wolverines open the 2021 season with 3 consecutive road meets before returning to James E. Longnecker Pool for the final 3 meets of the season.

Grove City will visit Bethany Jan. 29, for the season-opener. Seven nights later, the Wolverines head to Chatham in conference action.

Grove City concludes its 3-meet road swing Feb. 12 by visiting longtime conference rival Washington & Jefferson. It will be the 37th all-time meeting between the programs. W&J is Grove City’s most-frequently faced opponent in women’s swimming & diving. The Wolverines lead the all-time series, 23-13.

A split squad will head to W&J as Grove City also opens its home schedule Feb. 12 by hosting conference newcomer Franciscan. It will be the first meeting between the programs.

The Wolverines will close the regular season with a pair of home meets the following week. Saint Vincent comes to James E. Longnecker Pool for a dual meet Feb. 15. The regular season concludes Feb. 19, when the Wolverines host arch-rival Westminster. Grove City and Westminster have each won 16 of the previous 32 meetings.

 • A 5-meet PAC schedule awaits the Grove City College men’s swimming & diving team. The Wolverines will face each of the other 5 conference programs in dual meet action in February.

Three of Grove City’s 5 meets will be held at James E. Longnecker Pool. However, the Wolverines open the season on the road Feb. 2 by visiting Bethany. The home schedule begins Feb. 6 when the Wolverines host Saint Vincent. Grove City will then welcome Chatham to town 3 nights later.

Grove City will renew its oldest rivalry among this year’s opponents Feb. 16 when the Wolverines visit Washington & Jefferson. It will be the 93rd all-time meeting in a series that dates back to Grove City’s inaugural season of men’s swimming & diving, 1937-38. W&J is Grove City’s most-frequently faced opponent in men’s swimming & diving. Grove City leads the series 74-18.

The Wolverines conclude the regular season Feb. 23 with a home meet against arch-rival Westminster. It will be the 88th all-time meeting between the programs. Grove City has 43 wins in the series, which dates to the 1938-39 season.

The PAC Championships will be held March 1-5 at James E. Longnecker Pool. The championship format has been amended due to COVID-19 restrictions. Final championship schedule details are being determined by the conference. This season, the conference is also holding men’s and women’s dual meets separately due to COVID-19 guidelines.
