BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Hickory 48, Slippery Rock 33 — At Slippery Rock, the Hornets (1-0, 2-2) opened Region 6-AAA play with a win over the Rockets. Hickory moved out to a 25-15 lead by halftime and never looked back.

David Lumpp was the only Hornet to score in double digits with 13 points.

Slippery Rock’s Zack Ejzak and Matt Shearer posted 10 points apiece.

ä Farrell 88, Reynolds 42 — At Reynolds, the powerful Farrell Steelers jumped out to a 21-11 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Farrell led 47-21 at the half.

“Coach (Roland) Shannonhouse runs a class program,” praised Reynolds coach Jeff Gibson. “He could have named his score but he didn’t. He’s a class individual.”

Farrell (3-0 in Region 2-AA, 3-1) was led by Josh Williams with 26 points, Josh DeCarmen 14, Donald Jackson 12 and Bobby Pegues 10.

Chris Laverty powered the Raiders (0-3, 1-3) with 28 points, including all 19 of the club’s points in the fourth quarter.

ä McDowell 62, George Junior Republic 43 — At Erie, McDowell jumped out to a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter and went on to win the Region 7-AAAA contest.

Glenn Connor (13), Jason Keim (11) and Joe Letto (10) led McDowell.

Chris Cantino led the way for GJR (0-1, 1-3) with a game-high 19 points while teammate Anthony Floyd added 11 markers.

ä Massillon-Washington 60, Kennedy Catholic 44 — At Kennedy, the Golden Eagles fell behind 20-9 after the first quarter and never caught up against the Ohio power.

Mike Porrini pumped in 17 points to lead the visitors, while Brian Gamble had 15 and Justin Turner 12.

For Kennedy (2-2), Kyle Randall nailed 20 markers, including 3 treys, while Marsell Holden added 10 points, including 2 3-pointers.

ä Sharon 67, Greenville 52 — At Greenville, the Tigers improved to 3-1 in Region 2-AA play and 3-3 overall in a victory over the winless Trojans (0-4, 0-7).

D’Andre Johnson was the top point-getter for Sharon with a game-high 18 points. Sam Schweiss added 16, which included four three-pointers, and Jeff Gavin contributed 10 points.

Adam Marshall led Greenville with 12 points while Josh Chisholm and Jordan Batt each bucketed 10.

ä Brookfield 59, Mathews 39 — The Warriors of first-year coach Tom Roskos trailed 23-21, but turned it on in the second half to pull away in the non-league contest.

“I was proud of the kids,” said Roskos. “It’s nice to start the year off with a win in your first home game. We were able to trap a little bit and cause some turnovers in the second half.”

Brookfield (2-2) was powered by Brandon Johnson with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Jaylon Kelecseny added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

For Mathews, Tarin Brown and Rick Sommers each had 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Sharon 62, Oil City 33 — At Tiger Gymnasium, the Lady Tigers (2-0, 6-0) remained perfect in 2006-07 with a Region 5-AAA win over the Lady Oilers.

Brittany Csatlos bucketed a game-high 26 points and also registered 7 rebounds, 7 steals and 7 assists for Sharon. Also, Aryn Christman scored 11 markers.

Oil City was led by Morgan Bruce, who posted 10 points.
