West Middlesex's Lia Bartholomew traverses the course at Buhl Park during the Blue Devil Invitational on Saturday. She led local competitors with a 13th-place finish.

HERMITAGE – Fairview High’s Maddison Hayes and Zach Buckner swept the individual crowns during Saturday’s annual Sharpsville Blue Devil Cross Country Invitational.

In Buhl Farm Park, Hayes covered the course in 18:44.97. As has been the case on two prior occasions this season she edged Conneaut Area’s Meara Shannon (18:46.03).

Also for the Tigers, Buckner brought home gold by nipping McDonald’s Brody Rupe, 15:48.8 to 15:48.9 at the tape.

Marion Center edged Boardman, 189-190, for the girls’ team title, while Allderdice annexed 96 points for the boys’ crown, with McDowell (136) ending as runners-up.

Lakeview girls (10th, 254) and West Middlesex boys (7th, 240) were the highest-placing Mercer County-area squads.

West Middlesex’s Lia Bartholomew (13th, 19:52.28) and Luke Mantzell (18th, 17:03.2) and Hickory’s Matthew Jordan (19th, 17:11.6) were the area’s highest-placing individuals.

Thirty-four girls’ and 47 boys’ varsity teams were represented.

Up Next: Commodore Perry, Greenville, Jamestown, Lakeview and West Middlesex are slated to participate in the Cochranton Cardinal Invitational this coming Saturday.

FOUNDATION RACE

Several locals headed to Hershey on Saturday to compete in the 13th PIAA Foundation Cross Country Invitational. 

Wilmington’s Grace Mason placed 3rd in the Girls Class 1A race with a time of 20:07. Haley Hamilton of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart won the race in 19:29.

Reynolds’ Hannah Wagner placed 5th in 20:50 while Sharpsville’s Lauren Mehler finished in 20th place (21:34).

In the boys 1A race, Reynolds’ Troy Hart placed 6th with a 17:04 clocking.

In the Class 2A girls race, Sharon’s Gianna Labbiento placed 4th in 19:37. Marlee Starliper of Northern was 1st in a time of 17:40. Also, Sharon freshman Natalie Ostheimer was 15th (20:45).

GIRLS GOLF

McDowell Invitational

Coach Craig Antush’s Hickory High squad leads the McDowell Invite after day 1 of the competition. 

Hickory fired a 240 team score on Saturday at Erie Golf Club. They were followed by McDowell (247), Hoover, Ohio (249), Villa Maria Academy (250) and Peters Twp. (262).

Leah Benson and McKenzie Gustas both shot 79s to lead Hickory while Kyra Woods carded an 82.

The final round is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. today.

BOYS SOCCER

• Grove City 7, Seneca 2 – At Forker Field in Grove City, Jacob Irani fired in 4 goals on Saturday to lead the Eagles past the Bobcats.

Zach Boarts and Coldan Barr also had goals for Grove City.

The Eagles visit Sharon on Tuesday.

• Mercer 2, Redbank Valley 0 – At Lamor Rd. Field, the Mustangs shut out the Bulldogs from District 9.

Max Graul scored both goals for Mercer.

Mercer is at Kennedy Catholic on Tuesday.

• Slippery Rock 2, Hickory 0 – At Slippery Rock, Jack Allen and Vance Fowler scored goals to lift the Rockets past Hickory (4-4) in the non-region contest.

Ryan Davie was credited with an assist and Duncan McCoy posted the shutout in goal.

For Hickory, goaltender Julian Hudson made 13 saves.

The Hornets host Sharpsville on Tuesday.
